Taking advantage of the water surface of Trung Xuan Hydropower Plant, many households have invested in raising fish in cages.
Realizing the potential and advantages to develop fish cage farming on the Trung Xuan Hydropower Plant reservoir, in 2020, Mr. Pham Ba Luyen's family in Phun village invested in building 2 cages to raise grass carp, black carp, catfish, monosex tilapia... He participated in fish farming training courses organized by the commune, and proactively sought out and consulted more knowledge through books, newspapers, and the internet.
"Thanks to clean water, high oxygen content, and proper application of technical processes, the fish grow quickly and are less susceptible to disease. After 8 months, my family was able to harvest at a selling price ranging from 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg of fish. After deducting expenses, we earn nearly 40 million VND in profit each year," said Mr. Luyen.

Mr. Ha Van Nghi, Chairman of Trung Xuan Commune People's Committee, said: With the goal of developing cage fish farming in an effective and sustainable direction, the commune has established the Trung Xuan Cage Fish Farming Cooperative. From there, it helps members connect and support each other from the stage of selecting breeds to product care and consumption techniques. To support people with investment capital, the commune has secured credit with the District Social Policy Bank Transaction Office for households to borrow capital to invest in cage fish farming. Along with that, the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the District Agricultural Service Center have organized training courses to transfer scientific and technical advances to people.
Up to now, 80 households have participated in the commune, with 90 fish cages. On average, each cage has an area of 30 - 50m2 . In addition, available fish food sources in the area such as grass and banana leaves have been utilized and saved costs. The annual output of commercial fish for sale reaches 15 tons, with an estimated revenue of 1.5 billion VND.
In addition to grass carp, common carp, and monosex tilapia, some households also raise catfish and basa fish, contributing to product diversification and improving economic efficiency.
To develop sustainable cage fish farming, in addition to focusing on propaganda and guiding people to improve their knowledge and understand the care process; encouraging households to invest in applying scientific and technical advances; integrating a number of national target programs to support people with fish fry and cages, Trung Xuan commune also focuses on planning farming areas to ensure environmental hygiene.
“In the coming time, Trung Xuan commune will continue to mobilize people to develop aquaculture in the direction of commodity production, aiming at fish products according to VietGAP standards; prioritizing support sources from national target programs for sustainable poverty reduction and new rural career funding sources, so that people have capital to invest in cage fish farming,” said Chairman of Trung Xuan Commune People's Committee Ha Van Nghi.
