Unite to help each other reduce poverty

The Veterans Association at all levels in Can Tho City has effectively implemented the movement "Veterans help each other reduce poverty and do good business" with practical models and activities. Up to now, the city's Veterans Association members all have stable lives, many of whom are from well-off and wealthy households.

The Association of War Veterans of Can Tho City has just organized a field conference in 2025 in Tan Thoi Commune, Phong Dien District, with the participation of cadres and members of the Association of War Veterans. The cadres and members listened to the sharing about the effectiveness of economic models: growing longan, durian, plum; raising bantam chickens... On this occasion, the Association of War Veterans of the city organized a visit to the durian growing model of Mr. Huynh Van Quy in Truong Trung A Hamlet, Tan Thoi Commune. Mr. Huynh Thanh Phuong, Chairman of the Association of War Veterans of the city, said: "Every year, the Association of War Veterans of Can Tho City takes the opportunity to mobilize the organization of a field conference to create conditions for cadres and members to visit and learn good practices and good models. The cadres and members who attended the conference returned to share and replicate the model in the locality, contributing to increasing the income of the Association of War Veterans and the people".

According to Mr. Truong Minh Hoang, Vice Chairman of the Association of War Veterans in Cai Khe Ward, Ninh Kieu District, the Association of War Veterans in the ward regularly guides and organizes activities to support war veteran members in improving their family economy. Many branches proactively guide members in completing procedures to borrow capital from the Bank for Social Policies, build a revolving capital contribution fund, etc. The Association of War Veterans in the ward has established 4 economic cooperatives (THT) owned by war veterans, namely the Con Khuong fish sauce cooperative, the salt cooperative, the fish farming cooperative, and the excavator cooperative. Notably, the excavator cooperative model was established in 2023, with 5 members. The members contributed money to buy 3 excavators to provide excavation services. Currently, members of the cooperative have an additional income of 7-10 million VND/person/month.

The City Veterans Association is managing 8 cooperatives, 52 cooperative groups, 5 farm economic models, 247 family farm economic models, 829 business and service households. The models help create jobs for over 5,000 workers. Many economic models owned by veterans are operating effectively and have been replicated in localities, such as: Thoi Hung mango cooperative, Co Do district; Mud-free eel farming group of the Thoi An Dong Ward Veterans Association, Binh Thuy district; Beaded catfish farming group of the Thoi Lai Town Veterans Association, Thoi Lai district; Goat raising group of Veterans Association of Trung Nhut Ward, Thot Not District... Mr. Nguyen Hoang Nhi, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Phuoc Thoi Ward, O Mon District, said: "Currently, the Ward Veterans Association has 2 groups raising mud-free eels and raising meat tilapia. Members of the groups always share their experiences in raising eels and fish, helping many veterans increase their income. Veterans have a stable life so they actively contribute to the implementation of projects and tasks organized by the Ward Veterans Association."

According to Mr. Huynh Thanh Phuong, Chairman of the City Veterans Association, the City Veterans Association at all levels always pay attention to coordinating to support members and people to borrow capital from the Social Policy Bank with a total outstanding debt of 179 billion VND. Since the beginning of the year, the City Veterans Association at all levels has mobilized to build and hand over 7 houses, repair 3 houses of Comradeship, with a total amount of 819 million VND... Thereby, helping members have conditions to develop their family economy, gradually stabilize their lives. Every year, the number of well-off and rich Veterans Association members increases by nearly 4%. Currently, the City Veterans Association has only 17 near-poor Veterans Association households. In the coming time, the City Veterans Association will continue to direct the expansion of effective economic models; focus on vocational training, job introduction for children of Veterans and former soldiers; Mobilize support for CCB members to build and repair houses... The City CCB Association strives to help 100% of CCB members from near-poor households escape poverty sustainably by 2025.
