- With the desire to preserve and promote the beauty and cultural value of traditional costumes, in recent times, the cooperative group (THT) producing traditional costumes of the Nung ethnic group in Thien Thuat commune has focused on building and turning Nung ethnic costumes into OCOP products (One Commune One Product program). Thereby, contributing to increasing income for members, spreading local cultural values to the community.
To better understand how the THT makes traditional costumes, in early June 2025, we had the opportunity to go to Khuoi Y village, Thien Thuat commune to directly meet and talk with members of the THT producing traditional Nung costumes. Ms. Nong Thi Hoa, Deputy Head of the THT producing traditional Nung costumes, Thien Thuat commune happily shared: Since I was a child, my grandmothers and mothers have taught me how to dye indigo fabric of the Nung people as well as the steps to sew and sew a set of clothes for myself to wear every day and make beautiful clothes to wear on holidays, New Year, weddings... However, with the development of society, there was a time when the indigo fabric dyeing and sewing of traditional costumes of the Nung people in Thien Thuat commune was at risk of being lost. To preserve and promote the value of traditional costumes, at the end of 2024, the THT producing traditional costumes of the Nung ethnic group in Thien Thuat commune, consisting of 10 members, was established with the goal of developing the economy associated with local cultural identity and turning Nung ethnic costumes into OCOP products.
By participating in THT, in addition to being equipped with basic sewing techniques, group members are also directly taught and guided by elderly people with experience in sewing traditional costumes.
Ms. Hoang Thi Duyen, Ban Chuc village, Thien Thuat commune shared: Since joining the THT, from someone who knew nothing about dyeing, sewing, and embroidery, I have been taught how to cut, sew, and measure... Nung ethnic costumes. I am very happy because I can take advantage of the free time in farming to learn more about sewing and earn extra income from this job.
Sharing more about the journey of transforming traditional costumes into OCOP products, Ms. Nong Thi Hoa, Deputy Head of the THT, said: To make a Nung ethnic costume, it takes a lot of time and steps. Normally, it takes us 15-20 days to dye indigo fabric and 2-3 days to sew the costume. From local materials (indigo plants grown by the people) to traditional production processes, the THT carefully selects, putting its "heart" into every stitch. In addition, with the support of the District Department of Agriculture and Environment, we focus on investing in product stories, building packaging, brand labels and promoting products on social networking platforms and e-commerce platforms. The stages such as dyeing, cutting, sewing, stitching, buttoning, etc. are all performed by the members, so they still retain their unique beauty. Thanks to that, the products are increasingly loved and sought after by customers inside and outside the province.
Currently, each set of Nung ethnic costumes is sold by THT on the market at a price ranging from 1 to 2.5 million VND/set (depending on the size and requirements of the customer). Usually, a set of men's costumes will include: hat, shirt, pants and a set of women's costumes will include: scarf, shirt, pants... Since its establishment, THT has had over 50 orders for traditional costumes and accessories to serve events, competitions, festivals... inside and outside the district. From cutting and sewing traditional costumes, it has helped create stable jobs for members of THT.
Ms. Hoang Thi Anh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Gia district, said: Thien Thuat is a commune in the region III with many difficulties in Binh Gia district. For many years, the indigo dyeing and traditional costume making of the Nung people here have been preserved and conserved. With the right direction, over the past time, the THT has produced traditional costumes of the Nung ethnic group, Thien Thuat commune has been contributing to preserving and promoting the beauty of traditional costumes of the locality. In May 2025, at the conference to evaluate and classify OCOP products of Binh Gia district in 2025, the product was highly appreciated by the council and scored and classified as 3-star OCOP. This is also the first OCOP product in the district in the group of handicrafts of fabrics and garment products.
Traditional costumes are not only cultural beauty but also contain the quintessence and artistic creativity of each ethnic group. With creative methods, THT produces traditional costumes of the Nung ethnic group in Thien Thuat commune, contributing to promoting and developing the cultural identity of the Nung ethnic group in Thien Thuat commune in particular and Binh Gia district in general.
