What did Mr. Putin say after the direct Russia - Ukraine negotiations?

RT reported that in an interview broadcast by Russia 1 TV on May 18, President Putin said Russia wants to achieve "long-term and sustainable peace " by eliminating the root causes of the conflict in Ukraine .

"Russia wants to eliminate the causes of this crisis, create conditions for a lasting and stable peace and ensure the security of Russia and the interests of our people in the territories we have always talked about," Putin stressed, referring to Crimea, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions - which voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining Russia in referendums in 2014 and 2022.

The Kremlin chief added that people in the former territories of Ukraine consider Russian their mother tongue and consider Russia their homeland.

Putin's comments came after Russian and Ukrainian delegations held their first direct talks since 2022. The talks, brokered by Türkiye, took place in Istanbul on May 16. The two sides agreed to exchange a list of conditions for a potential ceasefire, conduct a major prisoner exchange and discuss a follow-up meeting.

The Kremlin does not rule out the possibility of direct talks between President Putin and Ukrainian leader Zelensky if ongoing peace efforts yield progress and concrete agreements.

Following the Russia-Ukraine talks , US President Donald Trump announced that he will have a phone call with Russian President Putin on May 19, focusing on trade and resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict .
