Standing next to the Ukrainian leader at Trump Tower in New York City, Mr. Trump said he would work with Kyiv and Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
"It's an honor to have the president come and see us, and he's been through a lot," Trump said.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Zelensky shared his desire to discuss with Mr. Trump his “winning plan” for the war in his homeland. Mr. Trump praised Mr. Zelensky, but said he also had a good relationship with the Russian leader.
"We have a very good relationship (with Mr. Zelensky), and I have a very good relationship with President Putin," Mr. Trump said, pledging to work with the US Republican and Democratic parties to settle the war in Ukraine if he is re-elected.
The war in Ukraine "has to end at some point," he said, and if elected, he would work immediately to end the war before he takes office in January 2025.
The Guardian newspaper quoted President Zelensky as saying that he and former President Trump "shared the view that the war in Ukraine must stop", and he said it was important to meet both US presidential candidates.
A day earlier, Mr. Zelensky met with Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.
