According to Dr. Pham Anh Ngan from the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, Vietnamese people have long considered hair a symbol of health and natural beauty. Thick, shiny hair is a sign of vitality and confidence. Hair loss is a common condition in both men and women, causing thinning hair and affecting appearance and psychology. Therefore, hair care is not only an aesthetic issue but also reflects the state of internal health.
The causes can include hormonal imbalances, genetics, stress, nutritional deficiencies, immune disorders, or scalp conditions. Despite the different causes, they all disrupt the hair follicle's growth cycle – the very source of life for a hair strand.
In Vietnamese folklore, people have long known how to use various leaves and herbs to nourish their hair, such as "For healthy hair, wash with Centella asiatica; for a clean scalp, wash with lemongrass leaves." This traditional practice has now been proven by many scientific studies.
A study by Jungtae Leem et al. (2022), published in Scientific Reports , analyzed the effects of traditional medicine in treating hair loss. The results showed that many herbs can improve cellular metabolism and hair follicle nutrition, while regulating the activity of hair follicle stem cells, a key factor in hair growth. These herbs also help increase blood circulation in the scalp, maintain cell membrane stability, and protect hair follicles from damage.

Some herbal remedies are commonly used to reduce hair loss.
Red Fo-ti root : Nourishes the blood, darkens hair, and promotes healthy hair follicles.
Rehmannia glutinosa and Angelica sinensis : Nourish the blood, improve circulation, and nourish the hair follicles.
Eclipta prostrata (black nightshade ) : Darkens hair, reduces premature graying.
Astragalus , goji berries , and chuanxiong : Help improve blood circulation and support hair growth.
White peony , Salvia miltiorrhiza , mulberry , black sesame , Thuja orientalis , Gastrodia elata , safflower , Codonopsis pilosula , quince : Often combined to restore hair, fight inflammation, and stimulate hair growth.
In addition, incorporating foods like black sesame seeds, black beans, and brown rice into your diet is also very good for your hair from the inside out. According to traditional Chinese medicine, these foods help nourish the liver and kidneys, strengthen the spleen and stomach, and support blood production, which is the foundation for healthy hair. However, it's important to use them correctly, avoiding overuse or the use of pre-mixed products of unknown origin, as they may contain harmful preservatives.
For cases of hair loss due to hormonal imbalances (postpartum, menopause) or autoimmune diseases (alopecia areata), self-medication with folk remedies is often ineffective. Patients should be examined by a traditional medicine doctor to determine the cause and combine traditional and Western medicine treatments appropriately.
"Herbs are a valuable treasure trove that helps treat hair loss thanks to their ability to improve circulation, nourish the scalp, and restore hair follicles. However, effectiveness is only achieved when users understand the mechanism of the disease, choose the appropriate method, and use it safely. The combination of the essence of traditional medicine and modern science is the key to restoring healthy, natural, and sustainable hair," shared Dr. Ngan.
