In an interview with Newsmax , US President-elect Donald Trump said he believes there has been a “handshake between the parties” in ceasefire and hostage release negotiations in Doha, Qatar, and that the talks are nearing conclusion.

Warning that if a ceasefire is not reached, "there will be a lot of trouble like they have never seen before", he added that part of the deal would be for Hamas to return the bodies of the hostages.

Brett McGurk, the White House's top Middle East official, is currently in Qatar to promote negotiations. Steve Witkoff, special envoy of US President-elect Donald Trump, is also coordinating the process.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the two sides are working to maintain Washington's unified message during the upcoming power transition.

However, while the president-elect is confident that a ceasefire can be reached soon, the current US administration is more cautious. Mr. Sullivan said that the parties are very close to an agreement between Israel and Hamas, but did not make any specific commitments or predictions.

According to a source from The Hill, an Israeli official confirmed that the deal is in the final stages but not yet completed.

Meanwhile, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the upcoming ceasefire agreement will initially include the release of 33 hostages held by Hamas. Women, children, men over 55 and the sick will be released first. Sources for the newspaper believe that most of them are still alive.

Under the roadmap being discussed, the parties have begun discussions on the second phase of the deal, which includes the release of all hostages within 16 days.

Haaretz notes that it is not yet known how many Palestinian prisoners Israel will release in the first phase of the deal. Kan Radio reports that Israel is prepared to release around 1,300 prisoners in this phase.

Meanwhile, The Jerusalem Post reported that the first phase will last for 42 days and the number of Palestinian prisoners released will depend on the number of Israeli hostages still alive.
