Tech company OpenAI is planning to make its Deep Research feature free to all users of its artificial intelligence (AI) app ChatGPT, including non-paying users.

This could increase competition as rival companies also lower barriers to entry for premium features, according to technology experts.

OpenAI launched Deep Research in early February 2025 and currently this feature is only available to ChatGPT paid accounts (including Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu).

This feature allows ChatGPT to perform extensive and in-depth research tasks as requested by users, automatically synthesizing information from multiple sources and generating detailed, elaborate reports within 5-30 minutes. This capability goes beyond answering routine queries of traditional AI models.

Meanwhile, technology giant Google recently decided to offer a similar feature for free on its Gemini chatbot, a feature that previously required users to sign up for a paid Google One service package. Similarly, Perplexity AI has long offered its Deep Research feature for free.

OpenAI's decision to make Deep Research free is seen as a necessary move to retain existing users and attract new ones, especially in the mainstream user segment that does not want or cannot pay for packages.

Previously, OpenAI also provided limited use of the GPT-4o model's image generation feature or cooperated with technology giant Microsoft to provide the Think Deeper feature for free on Copilot.

As expected, OpenAI's opening of Deep Research to all users will benefit those who want to learn more about a topic. Besides, this will also increase competitive pressure in the world AI chatbot market./.
