The technology company OpenAI is planning to offer its Deep Research feature for free to all users of its artificial intelligence (AI) application ChatGPT, including non-paying users.
According to technology experts, this could increase competitiveness as rival companies also lower the barriers to accessing premium features.
OpenAI launched Deep Research in early February 2025, and currently this feature is exclusive to paid ChatGPT accounts (including Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu).
This feature allows ChatGPT to perform in-depth and extensive research tasks tailored to user needs, automatically aggregating information from multiple sources and generating detailed, comprehensive reports within 5-30 minutes. This capability far surpasses the ability of traditional AI models to answer typical queries.
Meanwhile, Google recently decided to offer a similar feature for free on its Gemini chatbot, a feature that previously required users to subscribe to the paid Google One service. Similarly, Perplexity AI has long offered its Deep Research feature for free.
OpenAI's decision to offer Deep Research for free is seen as a necessary move to retain existing users and attract new ones, especially in the mainstream user segment who are unwilling or unable to afford subscription packages.
Previously, OpenAI also offered limited access to the image generation feature of the GPT-4o model and collaborated with tech giant Microsoft to provide the Think Deeper feature for free on Copilot.
OpenAI's expansion of Deep Research to all users is expected to benefit those seeking in-depth knowledge of a particular topic. Furthermore, it will increase competitive pressure in the global AI chatbot market.
