Toyota has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its factory in Guanajuato, Mexico, where the Japanese automaker produces Tacoma hybrid models.

According to Reuters , Toyota will invest an additional $328 million in its factory in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato. It is known that Toyota's investment will serve the transformation in the production process of the new hybrid version of the Tacoma pickup.

“The new version of the Tacoma pickup in Mexico will use a hybrid engine. Thus, Guanajuato will now be part of the group's electrification strategy,” Toyota said.

Toyota also confirmed that the above investments will help adjust production of new Tacoma models to serve the North American market in the future.

Since announcing the establishment of the factory in Guanajuato, Toyota has poured a total investment of nearly 1.2 billion USD here, while helping to bring more than 2,500 jobs to local people.

According to Reuters, not only Toyota, many automakers around the world are shifting production from internal combustion engines to electric variants to comply with stricter emissions regulations.

In fact, Mexico is considered an electric car factory but mainly exports products to other countries such as the US. The reason for this situation is said to be because electric cars are too expensive in Mexico, while the charging station network in this North American country is not really complete.

Currently, Mexico has about 1,100 charging stations, mostly in major cities, which limits long-distance electric driving. Industry analysts say hybrids could be a viable solution until the country sees more investment in pure electric vehicles.

In March, Tesla also revealed plans to build a Gigafactory in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon in an effort to expand global production.

Earlier at the COP27 climate summit, Mexico pledged that 50% of its car sales would be zero-emission vehicles by 2030.
