Thunderstorms often occur in the afternoon, evening, night and early morning, accompanied by dangerous weather phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, and hail. Notably, localized heavy rain can increase the risk of flash floods, landslides and geological disasters in mountainous and midland areas.
Mr. Mai Van Khiem - Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Department of Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting noted that the rainy area may expand to the North Central region around May 23-24, with heavy rainfall, locally up to 150mm.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, during the current thunderstorms, natural disaster risks are concentrated in the Northern region, especially the mountainous provinces. In recent days, many localities have had prolonged rain, causing the soil in many places to become saturated with water.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, heavy rain is likely to concentrate from the night of May 22 to the morning of May 24, with a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas and urban areas, especially in the North. Industrial zones, mineral exploitation zones and mines in the Northeast region also need to proactively prepare response plans if extreme heavy rain occurs.
In the coming days, the Central Highlands and the South are also likely to experience widespread heavy rain. After May 24, rainfall may decrease, but thunderstorms will continue in the evening and at night. Although the extreme level may be lower than in the 2023–2024 period, the risk still exists.
People need to regularly monitor and update the forecast bulletins of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting to be proactive in prevention. Currently, the North, South and Central Highlands have entered the rainy season, with the frequency of rain increasing compared to the previous period.
