With its outstanding global aesthetic and geomorphological values, Ha Long Bay was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage in 1994 and 2000. By 2023, the World Heritage Committee approved the expansion of the Ha Long Bay Heritage boundary to include the Cat Ba Archipelago of Hai Phong City, becoming the Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago Natural Heritage and the first inter-provincial world heritage site of Vietnam. The presence of Ha Long Bay in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites affirms the natural beauty, richness of landscape, culture and ecology of Quang Ninh province in particular and Vietnam in general, while also opening up development opportunities for Quang Ninh, especially the tourism industry.
With responsibility and strong commitment in implementing the 1972 World Cultural and Natural Heritage Convention, Quang Ninh province has made efforts and resolutely implemented many pioneering and breakthrough solutions, demonstrating its determination to prioritize the management, conservation and sustainable development of Ha Long Bay heritage. Including management and protection of the ecological environment, strict conservation of biodiversity values, focusing on selective, sustainable and comprehensive economic development of the heritage, promoting tourism associated with assessing the carrying capacity of Ha Long Bay, developing propaganda to raise awareness among people and tourists about the responsibility to protect Ha Long Bay Heritage.
Director of the World Heritage Center Lazare Eloundou Assomo highly appreciated Quang Ninh province's efforts to address environmental challenges, management and conservation of Ha Long Bay heritage. In particular, Quang Ninh's solutions and methods are typical models that localities and countries can learn from and follow. In the spirit of accompanying countries and localities that own heritage, including Quang Ninh province, the UNESCO World Heritage Center always supports and is ready to provide professional advice in the conservation and promotion of world heritages. In his position as Director of the World Heritage Center, he pledged to make efforts to work with Quang Ninh to manage, conserve and promote the values of world heritages of Quang Ninh and Vietnam.
