PCI Express 6.0 speeds up SSDs

According to Tech Unwrapped , although the new generation of PCI Express 5.0 SSDs only reached consumers earlier this year and is only supported by AMD Ryzen 7000 and 13th-generation Intel Core CPUs, the group behind the PCIe standard, PCI-SIG, is already looking ahead to the next generation version, PCI Express 6.0.

SSDs will benefit the most from PCIe 6.0

At this point, the design phase of this technology is complete, but devices using it have not yet been launched. Instead, PCI-SIG believes that consumers will have to wait until March 2024 to have access to products equipped with this technology.

The stated goal of PCIe 6.0 is to double the bandwidth of the previous generation. For example, a 16-lane PCIe 6.0 slot, commonly used for graphics cards and often the largest slot for most devices, will allow for bidirectional data transfer speeds of 128 Gbps. While the impact of PCIe 6.0 will be significant in many areas, it will be particularly beneficial for solid-state drives (SSDs).

Currently, conventional PCIe 5.0 SSDs use 4 lanes via the NVMe interface, achieving a bandwidth of 16 GB/s. With the advent of PCIe 6.0, SSDs will benefit from an impressive bandwidth of 32 GB/s. To make the most of this increased capacity, companies will also have to bring advancements in storage technology. Therefore, the technology world hopes that next year, SSDs capable of exploiting the full potential of 32 GB/s will appear on the market.

In the meantime, PCI-SIG is already working on defining the next standard, PCI Express 7.0. The PCIe 7.0 specification is expected to be finalized by 2025, with reports saying that the standard is expected to offer data transfer speeds of 256 GB/s. There are currently no applications that require such transfer speeds, but things could change in a few years.
