Polish Defense Ministry and Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro announced on April 27 that fragments of a military object had been found in a forest near Bydgoszcz, confirming information previously reported by the media, according to Reuters.
The Polish Defense Ministry said on Twitter that the debris was found in the village of Zamosc near Bydgoszcz, a city hundreds of kilometers from Poland's borders with Ukraine, Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region.
A Russian rocket near the village of Ukrainka in southern Ukraine in October 2022.
RMF FM radio, citing “unofficial information,” said the object was part of an air-to-ground missile, several meters long. The missile hit the ground and the warhead was missing. The object was found on April 25 but may have fallen some time before.
RMF FM said authorities initially thought the object was a drone but later determined it could be the remains of a missile. It is unclear whether the missile exploded or where it came from. However, RMF FM reported that the missile may not have been launched from a foreign country but from the Polish military. The object also had Russian writing on it, suggesting it could be a Soviet-era weapon.
The Ministry of Defence said there was no risk to the safety of local residents and the area where the object was found was being investigated by police and the military.
Ukraine admits its missile crash in Poland likely killed people
Poland is on alert for stray bombs from Ukraine. In November 2022, a rocket fell on the Polish village of Prezewodow, near the Ukrainian border. The incident killed two people and occurred while Ukrainian cities were under attack from Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially insisted the missile was Russian but later said he was not 100% sure it was not Ukrainian.
The Ukrainian military also admitted that there was a possibility that fragments of its missile fell on Poland while there were too many missiles in the sky during the Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure on November 15, 2022.
Poland said the incident was likely an "unfortunate accident" and not a "targeted attack".
