The conference took place under the chairmanship of Minister of Agriculture and Environment - Do Duc Duy and Acting Chairman of Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Thien Van. Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh chaired at Long An bridge.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, durian has become one of the fastest growing and fastest exporting industries in Vietnam, especially after signing the Protocol with China. In less than a decade, the country's durian acreage has increased sixfold, from 32,000 hectares to nearly 180,000 hectares, with an output of more than 1.5 million tons. The export turnover in 2024 is impressive at 3 billion USD, making durian an agricultural product with attractive export revenue. However, this industry is also facing many serious challenges.
Despite its rapid growth in production scale, Vietnam’s durian exports are almost entirely dependent on the Chinese market. This dependence has made export activities vulnerable, especially when the import market experiences fluctuations in demand, policy or competitive pressure. In 2025, although Vietnam remains the second largest durian supplier to China, its output and export turnover will decline.
Delegates attending the Conference at Long An province bridge
Faced with this situation, delegates analyzed and proposed many key solutions to develop the durian industry sustainably. In particular, they emphasized improving product quality, diversifying export markets, and expanding the system of growing area codes and standard packaging facilities. Currently, the country has 1,396 growing area codes and 188 durian packaging facilities that are officially exported to China.
Speaking at the conference, Minister of Agriculture and Environment - Do Duc Duy warned that if there are no fundamental and synchronous management solutions soon, the Vietnamese durian industry may fall into a spiral of excess output, falling prices, and loss of market. Therefore, localities need to urgently review suitable growing areas, avoid spontaneous expansion, abuse of forest land and sloping land; strictly manage planning, and prevent "hot" development from harming ecological balance and production safety.
In addition, tightening the management of growing areas and packaging facilities is an urgent requirement. Minister Do Duc Duy emphasized that it is necessary to clearly define the responsibilities of each code owner in accordance with regulations; at the same time, develop an internal control system in each locality. Periodic inspections and strict handling of code fraud will be clearly stipulated in the Circular to be issued.
In addition, support businesses to form a closed chain, including encouraging investment in cold storage, logistics centers and modern processing facilities; promote propaganda and dissemination of knowledge to cooperatives and farmers about sustainable farming processes and responsibilities in maintaining assigned codes. In particular, he proposed to research and develop a project to develop high-quality durian to enhance the brand and product value in the international market./.
