Development of the milling industry

Ha Nam province has a developed agricultural production, especially rice cultivation; at the same time, there are many craft villages processing food and foodstuffs using rice as the main raw material. This is an advantage for the rice milling industry to develop, creating jobs for a large local workforce, contributing positively to the innovation of agriculture and rural areas, especially the implementation of the National Target Program on New Rural Development.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has 18 traditional craft villages in the food processing industry. The most popular are the production of rice paper, vermicelli, pho, vermicelli, dried rice paper, rice rolls, fresh vermicelli, etc. These products are made from the main ingredient of rice of all kinds. In recent years, compared to other industries, the food processing industry has been assessed to maintain the most stable operations and has developed strongly over the years, attracting thousands of households to participate in the industry. This has been creating favorable conditions for the development of the rice purchasing and milling industry.

Through research, in Ha Nam , the rice purchasing and milling profession has developed strongly in many localities in the province in the past two decades. From small-scale milling establishments in residential areas, serving the consumption of people in villages and communes, large-scale milling enterprises with modern production technology have gradually been formed. The primitive, dusty milling machines from two decades ago have now been replaced by modern milling and polishing lines, creating clean, quality rice grains, meeting market demand. According to records, in almost all localities in the province, the number of enterprises and households purchasing and milling rice has grown rapidly and strongly in quantity and production scale; typically in the communes: Vu Ban, Binh An (Binh Luc); Liem Can (Thanh Liem); Nguyen Ly, Cong Ly (Ly Nhan); Dinh Xa (Phu Ly) ... Milling enterprises are doing well, operating busily all year round, especially bustling after each rice harvest.

Development of the milling industry
Thuy Long Ha Nam Company Limited, Chan Ly Commune, Ly Nhan applies modern machinery and technology in rice processing and packaging stages.

Operating for many years in the field of purchasing and milling rice for domestic consumption and export, the production scale of Thuy Long Ha Nam Company Limited, Chan Ly Commune (Ly Nhan) is increasingly expanding, currently creating jobs for over 100 local workers. The consumption market is stable, in recent years, the enterprise has imported large volumes of rice from the Central and Southern provinces, transported by waterway for consumption in the Northern provinces and cities and exported with a monthly consumption volume of over 10,000 tons of all kinds of rice. With a milling capacity of over 200 tons/day, Thuy Long Ha Nam is looking for partners to boost rice exports to the Chinese market.

Mr. Chu The Huy, Production Manager of the company said: Realizing the development potential of the rice milling industry, right from the construction of the factory, the company has invested in a synchronous system of modern, closed, industrial-scale machinery and equipment, especially the automatic conveyor system to transport rice, freeing up labor, being proactive in production and contract execution, reducing production costs. With the advantage of having a developed inland waterway port system in the region, helping to reduce about 60% of transportation costs compared to road transport, in 2025, Thuy Long Ha Nam has built and operated a new warehouse, increasing capacity by about 20%. Currently, we are also implementing the construction of a new factory in Ho Chi Minh City to increase the amount of purchased rice, forming and putting into stable operation a supply chain, consuming rice from the South to the North.

In Binh An commune (Binh Luc), the rice milling industry is also developing strongly in the villages, especially in village 3 - An Noi with over 30% of households participating in the profession. Of which, there are more than a dozen large-scale milling facilities, supplying dozens of tons of rice of all kinds to the market in the province and neighboring provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, etc. Mr. Do The Vinh, Head of village 3 - An Noi said: More than two decades ago, realizing that after each rice harvest, farmers were often forced to lower prices by traders, so even if they had a good harvest, the income of rice growers was not worth much, many households in the village boldly borrowed money, invested in buying milling machines, trucks and built specialized rice purchasing facilities in the area and neighboring areas. First, the facilities consumed rice in craft villages processing food and foodstuffs, then restaurants, schools, businesses, industrial parks and clusters in and outside the province. Taking advantage of bran and broken rice from rice milling, many households have invested in building pig farms and opened animal feed stores, bringing in a good income. Thanks to this profession, people's quality of life is increasingly improved, and the appearance of the countryside is constantly changing.

There are currently no specific statistics on the number of establishments, enterprises, business households or output and production value of rice milling in localities in the province, but according to the assessment of the functional sector, with the advantage of having many food processing villages, many industrial zones and clusters, road traffic and many developed inland ports, Ha Nam has great potential to develop the rice milling industry. From there, it will solve jobs for workers, contributing positively to promoting the economic and social development of the locality.
