Enhance the value of medicinal herbs
Taking advantage of the highland ecology, Mr. Nguyen Dac Tam - Ginger village, Prao town (Dong Giang) has chosen to develop a clean production model of lingzhi mushroom products, applying modern techniques to improve product quality. In 2023, the Tam Uyen lingzhi mushroom tea bag product produced by his facility was recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, thanks to meeting all criteria on quality, food safety and medicinal content typical of Dong Giang forest raw material area.

In 2024, the product continued to be awarded the A prize at the District-level Outstanding Agricultural Product Competition. This recognition motivated Mr. Tam to develop a new product line, Tam Uyen Ganoderma wine (3-star OCOP product). This is a transition from herbal tea to a drink with medicinal value, opening a new direction for the product chain from native Ganoderma mushrooms.
"After Tam Uyen Ganoderma tea bags were recognized as 3-star OCOP in 2023, I realized that I needed to continue to invest more systematically to maintain the product's reputation. My family has researched mushroom growing areas and started producing Ganoderma wine lines combined with many other medicinal herbs, hoping to continue to be welcomed by the market," Mr. Tam shared.

Mr. Bhnướch Tuan - Vice Chairman of Prao Town People's Committee said that the locality always prioritizes creating conditions for businesses and small production households to develop commercial products, especially products associated with the strengths of the highlands such as Solanum procumbens extract, Tea vine, Turmeric starch... aiming to participate in the OCOP program to increase value.
"The Prao town government has supported many entities to complete the procedures, provided guidance on improving packaging designs to meet OCOP standards, and introduced products at agricultural fairs in and outside the locality. We are also actively searching for and testing the expansion of other OCOP products in the area, especially specialties associated with community tourism and ethnic culture. In the coming time, the town will continue to provide incentives for technical training and promote consumption to create momentum for new products," said Mr. Tuan.
Investing in identity
According to the report of Dong Giang District People's Committee, from 2018 to 2024, the district has invested more than 3.7 billion VND in OCOP activities. Localities and departments have coordinated with associations and unions to organize a series of training courses, seminars, support on production techniques, food safety and hygiene, and guidance on building product profiles and packaging.

In addition, OCOP product introduction points and trading floors have been established in Prao town and some communes, helping entities have stable distribution channels. The OCOP program has received attention from the political system at all levels in directing implementation, considering it a key solution to promote socio-economic development. Thanks to that, the program has contributed to raising awareness among people and the business community about the importance of developing organic products, thereby expanding production scale and increasing income.
Mr. Duong Van Chung - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Giang district said that local OCOP products are mainly based on indigenous agricultural and forestry raw materials and traditional occupations. Typical examples include Ra Zeh forest tea - a herbal tea product that has achieved 4-star OCOP, the famous A Rieu salted chili of the Co Tu people, which is also ranked 4-star OCOP at the provincial level, along with many products such as bamboo shoots, wild bitter melon, rice wine, turmeric starch, etc. that meet the domestic market well.

Thanks to OCOP, product value has increased significantly, many establishments have increased production scale and expanded customers inside and outside the province. OCOP products also help preserve cultural values, contribute to preserving traditional craft villages and diversifying livelihoods for ethnic minorities. Along with the above efforts, Dong Giang district has set a goal of striving to have at least 25 products meeting provincial 3-star standards by 2025, basically preparing to move towards national 4-star and 5-star OCOP in the near future.
“Dong Giang determines that OCOP development must be closely linked to the strengths of local resources and cultural identity. We aim to link the value chain, from organizing large-scale production, to innovating technology and perfecting packaging designs, helping to improve product quality. In addition, the district will further strengthen cooperatives and link community tourism to expand the consumption market, while continuing to support investment in expanding raw material areas - a prerequisite for upgrading OCOP at the provincial and national levels," said Mr. Chung.
