Farm development associated with environmental protection

The farm in Quang Hop commune (Quang Xuong) raises earthworms to make organic fertilizer for plants.

In Minh Tien commune (Ngoc Lac), Mr. Nguyen Ba Giang's family is one of the households with a large-scale farm. Recalling the early days when he decided to borrow capital to invest in building a farm, he said: "At first, I intended to build a barn to raise pigs on a small scale with a small herd. However, when I started working, because I only invested in barns without paying attention to the wastewater drainage system, wastewater flowed into the garden, the stench affected the living environment of my family as well as many surrounding households, especially on hot days. Therefore, I researched and invested in building a brick biogas tank to treat waste, treat odors, destroy disease-carrying bacteria, and prevent the outbreak of dangerous epidemics; at the same time, I also created gas for daily cooking, and wastewater after the biogas tank to water plants"...

In recent years, when expanding the scale of the barn to raise more chickens, Mr. Giang also used biological bedding to decompose waste, reduce toxic gases and odors in the barn, creating a clean environment. The cost of making bedding is low, the materials are easy to find on the market, saving about 70% of the amount of rice husk used compared to traditional methods, thereby increasing the survival rate of the animals. He also planted more fruit trees around the barn to create green space, provide shade, and absorb odors.

It is known that Minh Tien commune currently has more than 500 households developing livestock. Most of the farms and ranches are concerned with environmental protection, focusing on building biogas tanks, using biological bedding and regularly spraying disinfectants, clearing bushes, planting fruit trees, digging fish ponds... to limit environmental pollution.

During the production process on farms, people use a lot of chemicals, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, plant protection drugs... which will pollute the soil, water sources and create agricultural products of uncertain quality. Therefore, to create safe vegetables, tubers and fruits, people have applied environmentally friendly measures such as raising earthworms, purchasing bagasse, corn, straw, shells of aquatic species and some types of microorganisms to produce organic fertilizer for crops...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoan in Quang Hop commune (Quang Xuong) said: "My farm combines raising chickens and growing fruit trees and flowers. Aiming to develop clean agriculture with safe products, I have dedicated a small area of the farm to raising earthworms. After researching, I know that earthworm waste is classified as a natural organic fertilizer, rich in nutrients and a rich microorganism system, suitable for all types of crops. I use earthworm manure as basal fertilizer and top dressing for fruit trees before the trees bloom and after each harvest or at the beginning and end of the rainy season, providing many nutrients for the growth and development of trees, minimizing environmental pollution. In addition, earthworms are also used as direct feed for chickens or mixed with corn bran, rice bran, soybean powder... to press into homemade pellets. Chicken manure is also used as food for worms, creating a closed circle, both utilizing waste and ensuring environmental factors in farming. feed".

Along with expanding production scale, many farm owners have focused on environmental protection with many measures applied such as closed-loop farming processes, advanced and modern farming techniques, and VietGAP and organic farming. Many localities focus on planning clusters and concentrated farm areas to limit environmental pollution in residential areas; people are also more favorable in investing in expanding production scale.

However, in order for people to understand the importance of environmental protection in production activities, localities need to strengthen propaganda and improve people's knowledge about measures to reduce environmental pollution. In particular, mobilizing livestock households in residential areas to move their livestock barns to planned areas to develop farms, synchronously invest in wastewater treatment facilities; build integrated farms for growing crops, raising livestock, and raising fish. Along with that, develop a circular economic model, produce in a closed cycle, use waste, waste products, and by-products as input materials for other production processes through the application of biotechnology such as treating livestock waste into organic fertilizer for crops.
