Patient NTT, 24 years old, was admitted to the hospital with persistent lower back pain. The patient said that he had been treated for urinary tract infections many times but the condition kept recurring. Through examination, ultrasound, and CT scan, doctors discovered that the patient had a left double kidney, with a dilated, thin, and dysfunctional accessory kidney/ureter.
Dr. Bui Khac Thai, General Surgery Department, Hoan My Dong Nai Hospital, said that this is a rare case of congenital double kidney. Double ureteral kidney can cause serious complications such as: causing chronic urinary tract infection or progressing to sepsis; forming stones causing obstruction and risk of kidney failure, progressing to kidney cancer.
To resolve the patient's condition, doctors performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the patient's accessory kidney/ureter. The surgery lasted 90 minutes. After the surgery, the patient's health was stable and he was discharged from the hospital.
Doctor Thai recommends that patients should have regular health check-ups to detect kidney abnormalities early. If there are any unusual health symptoms, they should quickly go to a reputable medical facility for treatment to avoid leaving it too long, causing dangerous complications that affect health and life.
