The second season of the series, which set a record at last year's Emmy Awards with 18 gold statues, is expected to begin production in Vancouver, Canada, in January 2026. Co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks are said to have completed the script for season 2, based on the novel by James Clavell - the main source material for the first season.
According to FX, the show will pick up "10 years after the events of the first season and continue the historically inspired story of two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably linked."
Emmy-winning actor Hiroyuki Sanada will reprise his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and will serve as a producer on the new season. Cosmo Jarvis will return as British sailor John Blackthorne, who finds himself in Japan after a shipwreck. They are the first confirmed cast members for season two; FX has yet to announce any other cast members.
In addition to breaking Emmy Award records, Shogun is also the most-watched show in the history of Disney-owned FX. The series, which airs on FX's cable channel and streams on Hulu, spent 10 weeks on Nielsen's streaming charts last year, amassing 4.27 billion minutes of viewing time during that time.
