Colorful party
Director Trinh Lam Tung shared that he hopes that when watching Trang Quynh Nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu (expected to be released on May 30), children will enjoy the adventure and fantasy elements, while adults will see a glimpse of their childhood with the values they once believed in.
This is partly shown through the trailer with the ancient Khoai village scene, where the boy Trang Quynh and his friends Trau, Coi Nhi, Bi Map and Muoi embark on a stormy journey. The film is developed from the animated series Trang Quynh in his childhood, which was very successful on YouTube with over 1.6 billion views.

Also scheduled to be released on May 30, De Men: Adventure to the Swamp (directed by Mai Phuong) is inspired by the classic literary work De Men's Adventures by writer To Hoai. The film begins when De Men follows Chuon Chuon to a strange city in the middle of the insect world , ruled by the great king Ech Com. At first, this place appears friendly, vibrant and has creative architecture, but behind that flashy shell are dark conspiracies.
Along with the above 2 projects, the audience will have more options with Wolfoo and the Three Realms Race (directed by Phan Thi Tho). The film is about a 9-year-old boy named Wolfoo who is passionate about Kart racing, always longing to be recognized by his father - Wulfen, but has never been appreciated, making him always upset and dissatisfied. Meanwhile, in the Three Realms - the central land of the Milky Way, Lord Idra organizes the Three Realms Race that only happens once every 500 years. Unexpectedly, Wolfoo and Wulfen are selected to participate in the race, facing powerful opponents. Both are forced to win, otherwise they will have to witness Idra destroy their home planet.
The film is a 2D animation, action - adventure - comedy, scheduled to be released in June 2025. According to Mr. Ta Manh Hoang, founder and current CEO of Sconnect Vietnam, the film's producer, Wolfoo and the Three Realms Race is a continuation of Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island, which was released to audiences at the end of 2023.
Innovate to win over the audience
Upcoming animated film projects stand out for their combination of indigenous cultural materials and modern filmmaking technology. In Wolfoo and the Three Realms Race , the characters and world in the film are built in a modern way, but the message of father-son love, connection and understanding are also humanistic values close to the Vietnamese people.
Or like Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu , with the opening line "once upon a time" evoking a familiar feeling like childhood fairy tales. The film recreates the space of a Northern village with banyan trees, water wharves, lotus ponds, communal house yards... The story revolves around the journey of a boy named Quynh and a buffalo with special abilities - a symbol of the close connection between humans and nature, inspired by folk legends.
Director Trinh Lam Tung informed that although the folk culture theme has many potential challenges, he is still determined to carry out the film to convey the message of gratitude, belief in goodness, family values and friendship - sacred things that need to be preserved and nurtured. "When people forget their roots, sacred values are easily lost. But as long as we maintain faith and gratitude, goodness will always win" is the message he sends through this film.
In De Men: Adventure to the Swamp , the audience has the opportunity to meet familiar characters such as De Men, De Trui, Tong Coc or the Frog King. For the first time, from the pages of the book that has captivated many generations of readers by writer To Hoai, the characters will be vividly embodied on the big screen.

According to director Mai Phuong: “The original story by To Hoai was published 70 years ago, so when creating the film, we tried to create characters and settings that are suitable for today’s life. For example, Xom Lay Loi comes from a book from 1955 but is imbued with images of the era such as recycled waste, magnifying glasses, knives and forks…”.
Producer Vu Duy Nam also hopes that those who loved The Adventures of Cricket will find familiar characters, but in a completely new form and perspective. The film combines modern technology, bringing new characters such as Rau Que, Ladybug Baby... along with the humorous image of the "Knife and Fork Throne" inspired by the Iron Throne in the TV series Game of Thrones.
Talking about the market potential, CEO Ta Manh Hoang said: We are not worried about quality, because many international animated blockbusters have long had the participation of Vietnamese human resources. These new projects are an opportunity to affirm that Vietnam is completely capable of producing quality long-form animated films, capable of competing with foreign films.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Trinh Hoan, representative of HKFilm, commented: “The number of young audiences who go to the cinema to watch animated films is very large, but most of them only watch foreign films, perhaps because they do not believe that we can make animated films for theatrical release. I believe this will be an important first step, not only for production units but also in building trust with the audience.”
“With this renewal, I believe that Trang Quynh Nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu is not only a connection for today's children with ancient cultural heritage, but also an opportunity for filmmakers to retell those stories with the breath of the times, using new cinematic language, film production technology and above all, gratitude to the audience and national pride,” director Trinh Lam Tung shared.
