"Sisu", a word that is deeply Finnish and has no equivalent in English, means the part of the stomach that the Finns believe is the source of strength for the whole body. In a more abstract sense, this word describes the indomitable, enduring strength that is the life force of the people of this Nordic country. However, in the film of the same name by director Jalmari Helander, everything abstract becomes more violent and intense when the filmmakers make a story about the revenge journey of the old man Aatami Korpi (played by Jorma Tommila), when the gold he dug up was seized by the Nazis.
War and action movie poster Sisu
It was 1944, when war broke out between the Finnish people and Nazi Germany. At this time, in a remote area, an old man named Aatami Korpi discovered a gold mine and intended to take it to the nearest bank, but on the way, he encountered a group of Nazi soldiers. These soldiers intended to take the gold and kill Aatami Korpi, but he killed the soldiers.
The film has a series of high-octane action scenes, eye-catching explosions that are no less than a Hollywood movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a high score of 94% (certified "fresh") and many "winged" compliments from film critics. Sites and newspapers such as Rolling Stone , New York Magazine / Vulture , Observer , RogerEbert.com , Wall Street Journal , indieWire ... all praised the film for its wild and violent action.
Most Western audiences loved the movie Sisu and gave it many compliments.
If there is a movie set in World War II, with details that can "shock" the audience, that can be compared to Sisu , it is probably the movie Overlord (Vietnamese title: Overlord Campaign - 2018), which was also shown in Vietnamese theaters.
Both films are set in the 1940s, when the war was raging, have a lot of action and, above all, are about Nazi Germany. If Sisu tells the story of an old gold miner's courageous journey to protect his gold, Operation Overlord takes a horror approach: a group of American soldiers discover the Nazis' creepy experiments.
Sisu is inspired by the 1982 action film First Blood and the historical Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä, who was nicknamed "White Death" during World War II. Sisu premiered in North America on April 28, grossing $4.76 million, according to Box Office Mojo. In Vietnam, the film will be released on May 12.
