Nenh Ward: Joining hands to build a green lifestyle

Forming environmental protection habits

The Nenh Ward Environmental Cooperative was established at the end of 2023, consisting of 38 members responsible for collecting waste generated from production, business, service and daily activities in 11 residential groups: My Dien 1, My Dien 2, My Dien 3, My Dien service area, Yen Ninh, Ninh Khanh, Nenh, Hoang Mai 1, Hoang Mai 2, Hoang Mai 3, Phuc Lam, Sen Ho. Every day from about 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the members of the Cooperative collect all waste from households to 4 collection points to classify into recyclable and non-recyclable waste before being transported to the treatment area by manual incineration or sanitary landfill.

According to Mr. Phung Minh Thong, Director of the Cooperative, each day the unit collects about 120 - 130 ^m3 , equivalent to about 58 - 60 tons of waste, reaching 95 - 98% of the volume of waste generated in the areas where the Cooperative has a collection contract. Thanks to daily collection, transportation and treatment, there is no longer a situation of waste backlog in households, which has contributed to significantly improving the environmental quality and urban aesthetics in residential groups.

Nui Hieu residential group currently has 210 households, more than 800 people, however, there are up to 7,500 workers renting accommodation in the area. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Lam, deputy head of Nui Hieu residential group, every day the locality generates about 15 - 20 m3 of all kinds of ^garbage . Currently, the collection and transportation of garbage is assigned to 2 sanitation teams to carry out daily. The rate of daily collected, transported and treated household waste reaches more than 90% of the generated volume. Not only contracting with 2 sanitation groups to collect, transport and process daily, the residential group also assigned tasks to the branches: Women, Veterans, Elderly to clean and sanitize public areas, main roads, branch roads, cultural houses, communal houses, pagodas... In addition to regularly propagating, mobilizing, reminding people to raise awareness of preserving, protecting and cleaning the environment, monthly, the members also directly participate and mobilize the people of the residential group to respond to cleaning, general cleaning, dredging sewers, salvaging and clearing waste accumulated in the environment.

Excited about the improvement in environmental pollution due to the many changes in sanitation, collection and transportation of household waste, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung in Nui Hieu residential group said: “Previously, every afternoon, the main roads and central areas of the residential group had a lot of household waste that was not collected in time, causing serious unsanitary conditions. However, since the environmental sanitation groups started operating, this problem has been basically solved, with vehicles coming to collect waste regularly, and everyone in the residential group is happy. There is no longer a situation of smelly garbage and flies and mosquitoes everywhere. Now the roads and public areas are much cleaner.”

For a pollution-free environment

After the administrative unit merger, Nenh ward has a very large number of temporary workers, approximately 105,000 people, so the amount of waste generated every day is very large, about 80-90 tons (approximately 200 m3)/day. According to Mr. Vu Van Hong, Vice Chairman of the Ward People's Committee, for many years now, the ward has regularly done a good job of propaganda, mobilization, and guiding people to classify waste at the source into different types of waste (organic waste, recyclable waste, hard-to-decompose waste...) to facilitate collection, transportation and treatment.

In order to regularly and thoroughly collect the daily waste generated in 31 residential groups, along with workers who are responsible for transporting waste from collection points to landfills and manual burning, the Ward People's Committee has increased the socialization of collection and transportation, established more service teams and cooperatives to collect and transport waste to collection points. The whole ward has a total of 19 sanitation teams belonging to 4 cooperatives responsible for collecting and transporting waste to collection points. Every day, from about 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., workers of the service teams collect waste from all households, rented rooms... and transport it to 14 collection points by garbage trucks, waiting for specialized vehicles to transport it to the treatment site in Viet Yen Ward.

Thanks to the daily collection, transportation and treatment of waste with a waste collection rate of up to 98%, the environmental quality in Nenh ward has gradually improved; there is no longer a situation where people arbitrarily dump waste into the environment causing pollution, traffic routes; drainage ditches, public areas, cultural houses, pagodas, etc. are cleaned and sanitized regularly, becoming more spacious, bright, green, clean and beautiful than before.
