On average, each year, the Pediatrics Department of Son La Provincial General Hospital receives, treats and cares for about 250 premature and low birth weight infants. The care and treatment of this group of children is still difficult because the children are too young, their organs are not yet fully developed, and their resistance is low, making them susceptible to diseases and at high risk of death. From 2021 to present, in addition to intensive treatment and care methods during the illness, after the child is stable, the Pediatrics Department has recommended and guided families with premature and low birth weight infants to perform the Kangaroo method.
Specialist II Doctor Nong Thi Diep Le - Head of Pediatrics Department, Son La Provincial General Hospital: This method will be done for 24 hours on the baby's body, lying on the person in front of him and helping the baby to be warmer, ensuring the baby's temperature because the human body temperature helps the baby to have a belly massage because his breathing rate and cardiovascular system are also more stable, good digestion, good breathing, good cardiovascular system, the baby will gain weight better.
Currently, the Pediatrics Department has 15 beds for Kangaroo Care. This method is most effective for premature babies born at less than 37 weeks of gestation and weighing less than 2.5 kg.
Ms. Vi Thi Peng - Na Dit Village, Chieng On Commune, Yen Chau, Son La: I came here in a premature condition, the baby was 2kg under term. With the doctor's dedicated care using the Kangaroo method, I feel that my baby's health is getting better every day and the affection between mother and child is getting closer, the baby is breathing evenly and is healthier.
As in the case of Ms. Ho Thi Dia, Huoi Khom village, Muong Hung commune, Song Ma district, when she gave birth to her baby at 29 weeks of pregnancy, the baby weighed only 1.2 kg, had poor breathing, and weak resistance. Ms. Dia was instructed by doctors of the Pediatrics Department, Provincial General Hospital on how to care for her baby using the Kangaroo method. After nearly 2 months of care using this method, her baby's health has improved significantly.
Ms. Ho Thi Dia - Huoi Khom Village, Muong Hung, Song Ma, Son La: My child has now gained weight and is drinking exclusively breast milk. Taking care of him with this method has made me feel that my child is getting healthier every day. Now I feel secure and just hope that my child can return home safely.
With the desire to not only save lives but also help premature and low birth weight babies develop comprehensively, In the project activities "Improving maternal and newborn health in ethnic minority communities" in Son La province from 2021 to present, the Department of Pediatrics, Muong La District General Hospital has regularly guided young parents to practice Kangaroo care.
Ms. Quàng Thị Hiền - Na Tòng Village, Mường Chùm, Mường La, Sơn La : I went to Mường La General Hospital for examination and the doctor ordered an emergency cesarean section. Due to premature birth, my baby was transferred to the pediatric department for mechanical ventilation and Kangaroo care. Today is the 8th day, I see that my baby is healthier, rosy and suckling well and I myself also secrete enough milk for my baby.
On average, the Pediatrics Department of Muong La General Hospital receives 150 to 250 newborns for treatment each year, of which over 60% are premature babies. Implementing Kangaroo Care is not only good for babies but also helps the hospital solve the problem of lack of facilities and incubators for babies.
Pediatrician Nguyen Anh Long - Head of Pediatrics Department, Muong La District General Hospital, Son La: In a small district like this, equipment such as incubators and heating beds are very lacking. With this method, the benefits are even better when it does not require anything, especially in terms of funding, it costs almost nothing, only the parents and relatives take care of it. Kangaroo babies have the same recovery reflex as full-term babies sooner than babies who are not cared for by the Kangaroo method.
In fact, Kangaroo care helps support brain development; promote the bond between mother and baby; improve breathing; regulate body temperature; help babies breastfeed more easily and increase breast milk; help babies sleep better and help mothers prevent postpartum depression.../.
