After 10 years of implementing Directive 43 of the Secretariat

Looking back on the 10-year journey of implementing Directive 43 dated May 14, 2015 of the 11th Party Central Committee Secretariat on "Strengthening the Party's leadership in dealing with the consequences of toxic chemicals used by the US during the war in Vietnam" (referred to as Directive 43), the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA) of Chau Thanh district has performed well the functions, roles and tasks of a social-charitable organization, uniting golden hearts to care for VAVA.

Chau Thanh district currently has 2,576 victims of Agent Orange/dioxin; many of whom are seriously ill and have difficult family lives and are in dire need of help from the community, especially families with many Agent Orange victims. In recent times, Chau Thanh district's Association of Agent Orange Victims at all levels has proactively coordinated with relevant sectors and socio -political organizations to strengthen information and propaganda work on the content of Directive 43, so that everyone can understand the Party and State's guidelines and policies on overcoming the consequences of toxic chemicals left by the war. Thereby, sympathizing and sharing the difficulties that Agent Orange victims are suffering, helping them to improve their lives.

Every year, the Chau Thanh District Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin has stepped up its efforts to mobilize resources to care for victims. After 10 years of implementing Directive 43, the District Association has mobilized more than VND 28.7 billion to help Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin overcome difficulties and stabilize their lives. The most common form of support and assistance to Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin is to organize delegations to visit and give gifts, mainly daily necessities for their families (with 66,314 gifts, total value of more than VND 23.3 billion).

In addition, depending on the specific circumstances of each victim's family, the Association at all levels also organized the construction of 45 "Agent Orange Shelters" and repaired 7 damaged and dilapidated houses (over 2.1 billion VND); donated 53 wheelchairs to disabled victims (over 157 million VND); supported 62 scholarships for children of Agent Orange victims (over 89 million VND); provided free medical examination and medicine to 263 victims (over 166 million VND); provided monthly allowances for 60 cases of Agent Orange victims in special difficulty (200,000 VND and 10 kg of rice/person); supported production capital (no interest) for victims with working conditions...

Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, Chairman of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange in Chau Thanh district, said that the activities of the district's Associations at all levels in recent years have not only mobilized material support for Victims of Agent Orange, but the officials and members have always focused on the grassroots level, creating all the best conditions to help Victims of Agent Orange overcome their inferiority complex and integrate into the community.

The Associations at all levels regularly organize volunteer groups to directly meet with Agent Orange Victims, witnessing the level of disability of each person and the difficult circumstances of each family, in order to find practical and effective ways to support and help. With this approach, in recent years, many agencies, businesses, and philanthropists inside and outside the province have accompanied and provided huge resources for the activities of the Associations of Agent Orange Victims at all levels in the district.

With the achieved results, Chau Thanh District Association of Victims of Agent Orange is the leading unit in the emulation movement "For Victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam" launched by the Central Association of Victims of Agent Orange in districts, towns and cities of Tien Giang province, recognized and highly appreciated by the Provincial Association of Victims of Agent Orange, local Party Committees and authorities.
