Celtic Vs Bayern Munich Prediction: Waiting For New History At Celtic Park

Celtic will play their first Champions League knockout match in 12 years when they welcome German giants Bayern Munich to Glasgow on Wednesday evening.

The new group stage format in the tournament has worked wonders for Celtic, but not for Bayern, who face the prospect of failing to reach the last 16 for the first time in over two decades.

Latest team news for Celtic vs Bayern Munich

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will make further changes here after a strong squad rotation in the weekend's cup win against Raith, with Adam Idah poised to return in hopes of extending his recent superb run of form, which has seen him score four goals in three games.

Daizen Maeda scored a hat trick against Raith, but will be suspended here after his direct red card in the match against Young Boys on matchday seven, meaning Yang Hyun-jun could replace him in the starting lineup.

Jota is still rebuilding his fitness after 18 months without playing football, while Paulo Bernardo is expected to join James Forrest on the sidelines after being forced off the pitch in the first half against Raith.

Joao Palhinha and Serge Gnabry are both doubtful after missing Bayern's weekend win due to illness, while Alphonso Davies remains sidelined with a hamstring problem after recently signing a contract extension at the club.

Kompany resisted the urge to rotate the squad at the weekend, finishing the job with a full-strength team, and it may look almost identical here, with Harry Kane ready to lead the attack in his return to the British Isles.

Leroy Sane scored from the bench against Bremen, but Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman are the most likely to start in the wide position, with the latter having scored in the last meeting between the sides seven and a half years ago.

Latest football match prediction: Celtic vs Bayern Munich

With the Champions League only just beginning its decisive phase, Bayern are on the verge of making unwanted history, after a disappointing start to their European campaign.

Vincent Kompany's team have lost three away games in the Champions League this season, and Bayern have never lost four away games in a single European campaign before.

A narrow defeat at Aston Villa followed by crushing losses at Barcelona and Feyenoord saw Bayern miss out on the top eight and progress straight into the last 16, despite a perfect home record.

The Bavarians reached the last 16 in 16 consecutive Champions League campaigns, with their last failure to do so being the only time they were eliminated before that stage since the tournament was rebranded – when they were knocked out in the group stage in a group that included AC Milan, Deportivo La Coruna and Lens in 2002.

There was nothing wrong with their output in the final third, scoring 20 goals in eight games in their league stage, but Bayern only managed two clean sheets and even conceded at home against both Dinamo Zagreb and Slovan Bratislava.

A leaky defense nearly cost them dearly earlier this month against Holstein Kiel, conceding three late goals in a close 4-3 win, but Kompany's men rectified that with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen at the weekend to extend their lead over the top eight points in the Bundesliga.

Facing their Scottish rivals has been advantageous for Bayern over the past few decades, with 13 unbeaten matches since their 1989 defeat to Hearts in the UEFA Cup, and four of those were against Celtic.

Bayern won both home and away against Celtic in the group stage in 2017, but were held to a 0-0 draw here in 2003.

A 0-0 draw would be a great result on paper for Celtic, but it might not do much to improve their chances of progress, given that they would then need to travel to and win at the Allianz Arena.

With no wins against Bayern in their history, and only one victory in 21 against past Champions League winners, there was little to be done against the home side, but they ultimately secured their first win against a German club in Europe during the tournament phase, beating RB Leipzig 3-1 at Celtic Park.

They need to change history a lot more if they want to go further here, because Celtic have lost all three of their Champions League knockout matches, with their most recent being a 5-0 defeat to Juventus in 2013.

The Hoops reached the last 16 in consecutive seasons in 2007 and 2008, but once again, European royalty stood in their way, with AC Milan and Barcelona eliminating them, and a similar mountain to climb lies before them here.

But with 6-0 and 5-0 home wins against Dundee and Raith Rovers last week, there's no shortage of confidence, and Celtic remain unbeaten at home in Europe this season.

The victory against Leipzig contributed to a record 10 points from their four home games in the group stage, and a heroic performance similar to the one Celtic enjoyed against Barcelona in this competition back in 2012 is needed if they want any chance going into the second leg.
