Over the past few days, the southern front of Ukraine has suddenly heated up; fierce battles have been taking place in the direction of Orekhiv and in the area of the towns of Stepnogorsk and Plavni in the Zaporizhia region. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukrainian and Russian sources and war correspondents reported on the situation and provided some details about the operations in this area. The Zaporizhzhya front, which since the failure of the AFU’s summer 2023 counteroffensive, has been considered one of the “most stable” fronts, has come to life in the past few days. The RFAF Dnieper Group has begun active offensive operations on the left bank of the Dnieper River, where the Kakhovka reservoir used to be.
The first notable achievement was that the airborne troops of the Dnieper Group, after taking control of the most important village of Kamenskoye on July 17, immediately consolidated their positions and repelled the AFU counterattacks. At the same time, west of Kamenskoye, the RFAF airborne units took control of the southern rest area near the village of Plavni. After taking control of Kamenskoye, the Russians immediately advanced towards the village of Stepnogorsk (northeast) and also to the east of this axis of attack, trying to overcome the Ukrainians northwest of the Stepovoye stronghold. Taking advantage of the Ukrainians' disarray, the Russian units quickly broke through to the village of Plavni and attacked Stepnogorsk. Currently, on the M18 (E105) highway, which is the shortest route to the city of Zaporozhye, it is possible to see the RFAF Dnieper Group developing an offensive along the left bank of the Dnieper River. Ukrainian military analysts also recognize the success of the RFAF units and emphasize that in the near future the situation in this area may become dangerous. A Ukrainian officer codenamed Alex wrote that as of yesterday, Russian infantry had landed in the most remote houses of the village of Stepnogorsk, the situation is still unclear. The RFAF has also sent armored vehicles to Kamenskoye, apparently to enhance the effectiveness of the infantry attack, with a mechanized breakthrough. So far, things are not looking good in this area.
These concerns are shared by the Deep State analytical source, which is part of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry . The source notes that the RFAF is constantly putting pressure on the AFU defense line, with infantry in the entire area from Plavni to Shcherbaki; Pro-Russian underground organizations in southern Ukraine said the situation was getting worse in the Kamenskoye – Plavni – Stepnogorsk area, as Russian troops made significant progress in the area of a children's music school in the village of Stepnogorsk. The Russian Rybar channel reported that the assault units of the RFAF Dnepr Group, which are trying to break through the AFU defense line, are advancing towards the city of Zaporizhia. In order to maintain their positions, the AFU General Staff has begun to send reserve troops to this front. Military Summary commented that after suddenly capturing the village of Kamenskoye next to the Kakhova reservoir, the RFAF quickly moved along the M18 highway to attack the village of Stepnogorsk, located 2.5 km from the left bank of the Kakhovka reservoir, 20 km south of the city of Zaporizhia and 2 km from the village of Plavni. This village covers the approaches to the city of Zaporizhia from the south. According to Russian war correspondent Alexander Sladkov, writing on his personal blog, as of the morning of July 26, troops of the 7th Guards Air Assault (Mountain) Division, part of the RFAF Dnepr Group, had captured a bridgehead in sub-district number 3 of the village of Stepnogorsk.
Reporter Sladkov added that the troops of the 7th RFAF Division pushed the Ukrainian troops out of their defensive positions in the village's children's music school, which was turned into a fortified AFU area. And the Russian troops continued their attacks, in order to take full control of the village of Stepnogorsk. The village of Stepnogorsk was of vital importance in the southern defense of Zaporozhye, and complete control of the village would allow the RFAF to advance into the AFU's defenses from the east. Moreover, this route was the shortest route to Zaporizhia. Overnight, the Ukrainian military also heavily shelled Energodar. A Ukrainian drone dropped shells on a parking lot near the fire station of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant; Ukrainian troops also attacked Polohy, located east of the town of Orekhiv.
