During a recent visit to the newly recaptured area from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) in the Kursk region, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again affirmed that the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) have the task of creating a “security buffer zone” along the border in the Sumy region of Ukraine. The depth of the buffer zone can fully protect the residents of the Russian border area.

In fact, the process of establishing this buffer zone was already underway, even before President Putin's announcement, as since the beginning of March, more and more settlements and territories along the border in the Sumy region have come under the control of the RFAF; this has also been confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities.

According to Sumy Oblast Governor Oleg Grigorov, the Russian army has taken control of the villages on the Sumy border including Novenkoye, Basivka in Yunakovskaya district; Veselivka and Zhuravka in Khotynskaya district.

Grigorov added that fighting was taking place in the area of the village of Vodolaga, as well as near Vladimirovka, Belovod, Konstantinovka, Kondratovka and the vicinity of Loknya. At the same time, he remained silent about the fact that Russian troops had taken control of the villages of Loknya, Maryino, Belovody and Vladimirovka.

After losing the village of Belovody, the AFU lost control of one of the important highways leading directly to the city of Sumy. Previously, the AFU actively used this road to transport troops and goods to the border region and into the Kursk region under their control.

Russian troops are now advancing towards Sumy, west of the Sudzha-Yunakovka highway; yesterday, Russia's Rybar channel reported that fighting was also taking place in Yunakovka, with the northern and eastern areas of the village now under Russian control.
4-6366.jpg The capture of the village of Yunakovka would give the Russians the opportunity to launch an artillery attack on the city of Sumy; since the village is only 35 km from Sumy. In addition, the village is also the AFU's logistics center on the border.

The fact that the Russian troops took control of the villages of Vladimirovka and Belovody, indicates that they have completely overcome the first line of defense of the AFU in this area of Sumy Oblast (the line Veselivka - Zhuravka - Basivka), and have begun to overcome the second line: Vladimirivka - Yablonivka - Yunakivka. The units of the RFAF Northern Group, advancing on the second line of defense of the AFU, were divided in the middle by the Snagost River.

Control of the village of Bilovody, which gave the RFAF access to the high ground in the direction of Vrachin and the village of Volodymyrivka, which was the bypass route on the left flank of the AFU defense line, in the direction of the settlement of Novomykolaivka, where the AFU defense positions were located, was intended to protect the left flank of the second defense line and the center of the third defense line of the AFU.

Russian intelligence, after analyzing the obituaries of Ukraine, showed that AFU now has to send POGO unit (31st Chernivtsi border guard detachment) to the Sumy front. This is a Ukrainian border guard unit, responsible for guarding the border with Moldova. Obviously, the situation of AFU reserve forces is becoming increasingly difficult.

According to the British Sky News channel, Western media began to report that the RFAF has concentrated up to 50,000 troops on the border with Ukraine's Kharkov region. Russian war correspondent Alexei Zhivov said that to complete the task of creating a security buffer zone, as declared by President Putin, it is necessary to deploy 50,000 troops in each of the buffer zones in Kharkov, Sumy and Chernihiv; but even that may not be enough.
12.jpg
In addition, these units must be combat-experienced and well-equipped. Nine months ago, the AFU decided to open the Kursk front, allowing the RFAF to bring in combat-experienced units such as the 56th Airborne Regiment and the 155th Marine Brigade. In this way, they hoped to slow down the pace of the offensive in other areas. Perhaps the idea was good, but now it will come back to them like a boomerang; Zhivov analyzed.

In contrast, the Ukrainian news and analysis source DeepState described the RFAF’s advance in the Sumy region. It is known that the RFAF made its first attempts to seize positions in Ukraine’s Sumy region in early March this year, during the active push to push Ukrainian troops out of Russia’s Kursk region.
14.jpg
According to Deep State, after the Russian army recaptured Sverdlikovo (in the Kursk region), the Russian army began to push across the border. The first attempts to enter the Sumy region, starting from the village of Novenke; but the Russian army was unsuccessful, because the AFU fiercely blocked, forcing the Russian army to hide in designated positions or in plantations.
12-1841.jpg
After that, the AFU pushed the Russians back from the border, but the determined fighting spirit and active use of FPV UAVs did not help the AFU to hold the border area. Next, the RFAF took control of the village of Zhuravka and the AFU could not stop and defeat the Russians from advancing across the border, Deep State explained.

Then, through the Novenke bridgehead, the Russian troops advanced deep into Ukrainian territory and advanced towards Basivka in the Sumy region to try to gain a foothold in this area and carry out the task of blocking the AFU's logistical supply line, to Sudzha in the Kursk region.
10-1329.jpg
However, the AFU firmly held back the RFAF advance for a long time, and FPV UAV units were urgently deployed to stabilize the situation. After encountering stubborn resistance in this sector of the front, the Russians began to look for other ways to break through to Sumy. They began to attack the Zhuravka and Veselivka areas.
2-7720.jpg
The RFAF found a weak point between Zhuravka and Novenke, using the redoubts to break through further. Unfortunately, the constant pressure from the Russian infantry took its toll on the AFU, and the Russians gained the upper hand in this area. The enemy was often seen trying to rush towards Basivka on four-wheeled vehicles, DeepState wrote.
19.jpg
For a long time, the Sumy border area could be considered a gray zone. AFU units tried their best to stop the Russian advance, using FPV UAVs. Meanwhile, the RFAF actively used dispersed infantry and ATVs, to quickly reach the attack target.

The RFAF has now gained a foothold along the Veselovka-Zhuravka-Novenkoye-Bosivka route and continues to try to advance into Belovody, and the situation of the Ukrainian troops in Loknya is very difficult at the moment. In particular, AFU units are actively blocking the Russian troops in these populated areas.

Deep State also said that the AFU has somewhat stopped the rapid advance of Russian troops deep into the Sumy region, but the Russians continue to attack stubbornly. After pushing Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk region, Russia plans to create a buffer zone in the Sumy region. This is within Kiev’s expectations – DeepState analysts concluded.
