Managing durian quality to maintain export market

With efforts to prove that the quality of Vietnamese durian meets the requirements of importers, China has accepted that Vietnamese durian can return to this market by granting additional growing area codes and packing facility codes to Vietnamese durian production and export localities. Facing this opportunity, durian production localities have increased control and quality inspection to ensure export standards and quality.

According to Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, after China granted 829 more growing area codes and 131 packing facility codes for the Vietnamese durian industry, the whole country now has 1,396 growing area codes and 188 packing facility codes for durian exported to China. This event marks an important step forward in the effort to expand the scale of official exports of exclusively grown products to the Chinese market.

To achieve this result, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has closely followed the development of the durian industry, from which it has provided operational instructions to the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, and related units to have synchronous solutions to complete the requirements on standards of the Chinese market, especially the requirements on food safety, plant quarantine and traceability system for durian products.
The agricultural sector has issued many recommendations for farmers, cooperatives, and export purchasing enterprises to strictly comply with the regulations of importers, comply with durian production techniques, and not leave any preservatives or chemicals in durian when selling to the market. By this June, after a period of inspection and control by the functional sector, many enterprises and production facilities have ensured the quality of goods and have not violated the regulations of importers.
The Vietnamese durian industry is mainly concentrated in the Central Highlands and the South. In the localities producing durian for export, both local leaders and people have made every effort to manage quality according to market requirements.
Mr. Doan Van Danh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ben Tre, said that up to now, the province has not detected any cases of production areas or export shipments contaminated with amber, cadmium or other banned substances. However, through specialized agencies and the grassroots agricultural extension system, producers and businesses will be guided to produce safely, avoiding the risk of contamination with heavy metals and other banned substances. In addition, the provincial agricultural sector has also strengthened the inspection and supervision of production areas and packing houses to promptly detect and handle.
In fact, currently, tightening the management of durian is still the key issue to promote stable and sustainable exports. Durian producing localities in the Southern region have also organized inspections at all stages from receiving documents to checking the actual durian material areas applying for growing area codes and monitoring growing area codes. Durian export activities bring in revenue for the whole country, so management is also unified and synchronized according to the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the direct supervisor is the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, so localities strictly comply.
Tien Giang is a large durian “barnacle” of the southern provinces, with more than 24,500 hectares and an output of 458,000 tons/year. According to a representative of the Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Environment, to manage the quality of durian for export, Tien Giang has deployed 6 cadmium control models in durian growing areas in Cai Be and Cai Lay, with enterprises such as Tien Nong, Thien Sinh, Phuoc Hung and Ngoi Sao (4 models), the remaining 2 models are from cooperatives.
These models focus on soil improvement and applying safe techniques, including: Applying the Integrated Intensive Cultivation Technical Process for Durian (abbreviated as Process 116), using cadmium-free or extremely low-content fertilizers, combining Process 116 with Biochaz (activated carbon) to absorb cadmium, combining Process 116 with planting cadmium-absorbing plants (mint, water mimosa, Indian pennywort, kale) suitable for the locality, combining Process 116 with microbial preparations and Biochaz to optimize cadmium control.
The quality management models for exported durians have also brought good results, supplying fresh durians to the Chinese market. Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, emphasized that the cultivation process of chasing productivity and lacking input control has unintentionally introduced toxins into the production chain, which is also a warning for the sustainable development of the durian industry in the future.
Therefore, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen recommended that it is necessary to establish a quality monitoring system from the root, strengthen the testing process at durian production facilities by building food safety monitoring and plant quarantine programs right at the durian gardens and packaging facilities by expanding the list and improving the capacity of many qualified laboratories covering durian growing areas.
The traceability will be accurate and clear when Vietnamese or Chinese authorities need to trace the code, residue of banned substances... of exported durian. In the long term, the durian industry needs to plan concentrated and sustainable growing areas; tighten management and issue codes for growing areas and packaging facilities; strictly control input materials; change cultivation processes; build national brands...
