Quang Ngai faces flood after flood, landslide after landslide

Heavy rains have returned, and the floods on the rivers that had just receded after the rains two days ago have now risen again. Quang Ngai is struggling to cope with the risk of "floods on top of floods, landslides on top of landslides".

From dawn to 8 a.m. on November 1, the entire Quang Ngai province experienced continuous heavy to very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 100mm to 250mm, with some places experiencing over 300mm. According to the Quang Ngai Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, this heavy rain could last until the morning of November 3, with total rainfall in coastal and delta areas exceeding 500mm in some places.

The rain not only causes flooding in downstream areas but also complicates landslides in mountainous areas.

Localities such as Ngoc Linh, Son Tay, and Thanh Bong are facing the risk of continued landslides.

"The rain has not stopped yet, the water saturation in the soil is high, so the possibility of new landslides is very high. Cracks and slides have appeared in many places. It is necessary to pay attention to monitor the scene and be ready to respond," the Provincial People's Committee directed.

During this rainstorm, after only one day, some inner-city areas of Quang Ngai province such as the old five-way intersection, Tran Hung Dao street, Phan Boi Chau street… are flooded. Similar situations are also happening in low-lying communes, isolating many residential areas.

The previous flood had just receded, and people had not finished cleaning their houses when the next flood came. Quang Ngai province is monitoring the rain situation to have a realistic direction plan.

An equally serious problem is that Quang Ngai had more than 200 landslides during the recent flood, and now continues to face new landslides.

In the mountainous commune of Son Tay, authorities took advantage of the rare time when the rain stopped to work through the night to fix landslides on Provincial Road 623, trying to temporarily open the route to the commune center - where more than 6,000 households live.

However, according to Mr. Dinh Truong Giang - Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Tay commune, the repair work has been temporarily suspended because of the return of heavy rain. "Many places are still experiencing landslides, which is very dangerous. If the rain continues like this, the risk of new landslides is inevitable," Mr. Giang worried.

Meanwhile, the Dakdrinh and Nuoc Trong hydropower reservoirs (the two largest reservoirs in Quang Ngai province) have announced to increase the flow to regulate flood discharge to welcome the new rain. This makes the downstream areas of Tra Khuc, Tra Bong and Ve rivers likely to experience new floods.

Floodwaters are rising, landslides are not stopping. Quang Ngai is entering the most severe days of the rainy season, when natural disasters follow one another.

On the morning of November 1, the Department of Education and Training of Quang Ngai province issued a notice to schools in the eastern region (the entire old Quang Ngai province) to urgently let students stay home from school to ensure safety because flooding is happening rapidly.
