New rules make it easier to enable monetization on YouTube

According to TechCrunch , YouTube said on its blog that under the new rules, to qualify for YPP now only requires 500 subscribers, 3 public video uploads in the last 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts video views in the last 90 days. Previously, the requirements were at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the last year or 10 million Shorts video views in the last 90 days.

New changes help creators quickly join the monetization program

If creators meet the new threshold, they can apply to join YPP and gain access to monetization tools like Super Thanks, Super Chat, and Super Stickers, as well as subscription tools like channel memberships and the ability to promote their own merchandise on YouTube Shopping.

The three uploads per 90 days criterion is appealing because creators of long-form videos may not produce many videos in that time period, despite attracting millions of views. YouTube is rolling out this new eligibility criterion in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea, and will then roll it out to other countries that have YPP.

YouTube is also expanding its Shopping affiliate beta to more creators in the US. Creators who have joined YPP and have more than 20,000 subscribers will be eligible to tag products in their videos and Shorts and earn commissions. YouTube introduced shopping features for Shorts to some creators in the US last November.

The Google-owned company has been focused on introducing new monetization tools for short-form video creators. In February, YouTube also began sharing ad revenue on Shorts with creators. In its fourth-quarter 2022 earnings report, the company said Shorts had surpassed 50 billion daily views.

The announcement comes weeks after YouTube said it would phase out Stories in favor of Shorts, an understandable move given the lack of Stories users.
