According to a VNA reporter in Russia, on November 11, the first humanoid artificial intelligence (AI) robot was launched in Moscow. This is a product of the New Technology Alliance, which includes four leading Russian companies specializing in robotics technology.
The robot named IDOL operates completely automatically, focusing on three most human functions: moving, using objects and especially communicating like a human and with humans.
The Emerging Technologies Alliance said IDOL was trained using collected datasets, and it also learns by interacting with its external environment. The robot is capable of operating completely offline, expressing emotions and communicating without an internet connection.
Along with movement and manipulation, communication is important, says Alexey Yuzhakov, the head of the New Technologies Alliance, which is key to a robot's humanness: it includes the ability to understand speech, engage in purposeful dialogue, facial expressions and empathy.
Robots with this functionality will operate confidently in factories, logistics and service environments – banks, airports or any public space.
According to the authors, the robot's face is equipped with 19 servo motors and flexible cables, allowing it to reproduce at least 12 basic emotions and hundreds of small expressions. The robot has 7 microphones to create 3D sound and reliable voice recognition, even in noisy environments.
IDOL has a total of 67 joints of freedom, including 14 joints in each arm and 6 joints in the neck, controlled by a specialized neural network. The robotic arm is equipped with a gripping hand, allowing it to lift objects weighing up to 10kg.
IDOL is introduced in two versions: a walking robot and a desktop robot. The desktop version weighs 40 kg, while the walking version weighs 95 kg.
The walking robot has yet to demonstrate stability in maintaining its center of gravity, even at its launch, but a representative of the New Technology Alliance asserted that each glitch will be a lesson for the robot itself, like a child walking, falling, trying again and gradually understanding how the world works.
IDOL robot is capable of moving at speeds of up to 6 km/h. In the manufacture of IDOL, the authors used up to 77% of domestically produced components and they are planning to increase this ratio to 93%.
Currently, the two countries that develop the most powerful humanoid robots are the US and China, but the New Technology Alliance expressed confidence that Russia has the ability to win a niche market - that of universal humanoid robot platforms./.
