South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics on May 13 announced its thinnest phone ever, equipped with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features, to surpass rival Apple in the high-end market.
Samsung Electronics launched the S25 Edge to meet the growing demand for compact smartphones, especially among consumers in their 20s and 30s. Samsung said users gave clear feedback that they wanted a slimmer, more portable device without compromising performance. It made structural changes to reduce the thickness of internal components, including the printed circuit board and heat dissipation system.
Analysts say Samsung strategically timed the launch of the S25 Edge to get ahead of Apple, which is expected to launch a thinner iPhone in the second half of the year. By launching the product a few months earlier, Samsung could potentially influence Apple and attract consumers looking for thinner smartphones, said Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities. It seems like a calculated decision to capture that segment of demand, he said.
Samsung said the S25 Edge will go on sale in South Korea on May 23 and in the US on May 30. Samsung will also sell it in about 30 countries, including China and Europe.
Starting at $1,099, the phone has a 6.7-inch (170mm) display and a 5.8mm thick body, making it larger than the base S25 but only slightly heavier.
The S25 Edge is packed with Samsung's latest AI capabilities, including multimodal AI that lets users interact with the device in real-time through visuals and voice, using the camera to ask questions.
Samsung did not disclose the production location of this new phone model.
According to data from Counterpoint Research, Samsung became the world's top smartphone vendor in the first quarter of 2025, capturing 20% of the global market share and surpassing Apple with 19% market share.
However, Samsung said last month that its second-quarter 2025 sales could be affected if tariff risks weaken demand./.
