The suspect reportedly fired two shots into the air and threw two burning bottles out of the car. Police said the man’s wife had contacted them and reported the possible kidnapping of a child.

Reuters quoted police as saying the man in the car was 35 years old while the child was only 4 years old. The dpa news agency confirmed that there was only one child in the man's car.
"We are dealing with a static hostage situation," Hamburg police wrote on social network X, formerly known as Twitter. Police later added that they suspected the incident was due to a custody dispute.
A police spokeswoman told German media that communication was going well with the suspect, who spoke Turkish.

German federal police spokesman Thomas Gerbert said a large number of police were at the scene, along with psychologists and police officers who specialize in hostage negotiations.
All operations at Hamburg airport were halted while the terminals were evacuated. The airport authority said 27 flights were affected.
