Vinh airport closed for 6 months, how to deal with ticket buyers?

(NLDO) – Vinh Airport will be temporarily closed from July 1 for 6 months for infrastructure repairs and upgrades, forcing many passengers to change their plans to return home.

On June 24, reporting to Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Ngoc Cao (living in Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City) said that in mid-June, she bought 2 Vietnam Airlines tickets for her parents to return to their hometown in Ha Tinh, from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh (Nghe An), departing on July 11.

However, the news that Vinh airport would be closed for 6 months for repairs made her whole family worried and forced them to change their plans to return home.

"I contacted the airline and was informed that I could change the destination to Vinh airport or get a refund, but the destination is Dong Hoi airport ( Quang Binh ) or Tho Xuan airport (Thanh Hoa), both of which are inconvenient because the departure schedule is early in the morning.

I had to choose the refund option and then book a bus for my parents to return to Ha Tinh . The company said that I would be refunded within 7 days from the date of receiving the company's notice if I paid by domestic card, MoMo wallet..." - Ms. Cao said.

According to the reporter, many passengers who bought Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet tickets to Vinh are also contacting the airline to ask about refund procedures and flight schedule changes after Vinh airport temporarily closed.

Vietnam Airlines said affected passengers will be assisted in changing their itinerary or refunding their tickets free of charge, depending on their needs. The airline recommends that passengers with flight plans related to Vinh airport during the above time actively update their schedules on the airline's official channels.

The airline will coordinate and closely monitor with relevant units to update the repair progress, and proactively develop a plan to restore operations as soon as Vinh airport is qualified to resume operations, especially during the peak period at the end of 2025.

Vietjet Air also informed passengers whose flights were affected that the airline would support them according to their requests, such as transferring passengers to flights on the same itinerary before July 1, 2025 for free; or transferring to other flights to and from Thanh Hoa, Hanoi, Dong Hoi; or reserving their identification according to service policy.

In addition, Vietnam Airlines also increased the frequency of flights to neighboring airports such as Noi Bai (Hanoi) and Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa). Vietjet plans to increase the frequency of flights to neighboring airports such as Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), Noi Bai (Hanoi) or Dong Hoi (Quang Binh) to serve the travel needs of people and tourists.

Previously, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam sent a document to the People's Committee of Nghe An province and relevant units in the industry regarding the temporary closure of Vinh Airport to implement Package No. 11 "Construction of works, supply and installation of equipment" under the project "Repair of runways and taxiways - Vinh Airport".

Vinh Airport will be temporarily closed from 0:00 on July 1, 2025 to 23:59 on December 31, 2025.
