After the news that Vinh airport officially decided to temporarily suspend operations from July 1, many customers who bought air tickets to travel after July are worried about difficulties in changing or refunding tickets.
Support for changing flights, refunding tickets or reserving tickets
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have both announced support for passengers traveling to and from Vinh airport. However, the support methods for each airline are different, depending on ticket conditions.
Specifically, on June 24, Vietnam Airlines announced that it would temporarily suspend all flights to and from Vinh airport during the closure period.
To serve travel needs, the airline will increase the frequency of flights to nearby airports such as Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), Noi Bai ( Hanoi ) and Dong Hoi (Quang Binh).
Passengers with tickets during the affected period will be supported to change their itinerary to another flight within the same network for free, or refund their tickets if they no longer need them.
Vietnam Airlines recommends that passengers regularly update information on official channels and proactively adjust their travel plans.
At the same time, the airline is also closely coordinating with functional units to closely monitor the construction progress, ready to resume operations as soon as the airport is qualified for operation, especially during the peak period at the end of the year.
Increase frequency to nearby airports
Vietjet will flexibly transfer flights and reserve tickets for passengers with flights related to Vinh airport.
Specifically, passengers can choose one of three options. Free transfer to another flight on the same itinerary, departing before July 1, 2025. Change to flights to nearby airports such as Thanh Hoa, Hanoi or Dong Hoi. The final option is to request a refund and reserve identification according to the airline's policy.
In addition, Vietjet also plans to increase frequency to nearby airports to meet people's travel needs, especially during the peak summer tourist season.
The airline encourages passengers to proactively contact the call center, ticket office, official agent or service counter at the airport for the earliest support.
According to the plan of Vietnam Airports Corporation - ACV, in 2025 this enterprise will carry out 3 projects to repair and renovate runways, terminals, and aircraft parking lots at Vinh airport, with a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND.
The project to renovate the existing T1 passenger terminal has a total investment of 68.36 billion VND, to meet the operating capacity of 3 - 3.5 million passengers/year by 2030.
The project to repair the existing runway is 2,400m long, 45m wide, and includes 2 taxiways, brake strips, safety strips... with a total investment of more than 623 billion VND.
The project to expand and renovate the aircraft parking lot to ensure the exploitation of 9 parking positions for code C aircraft (Airbus A320, A321 and equivalent) has a total investment of 236.63 billion VND.
What should North Central passengers note?
The temporary closure of Vinh airport for 6 months will cause a lot of disruption for passengers, especially in Nghe An, Ha Tinh and surrounding areas.
During this period, passengers can consider flying from alternative airports such as Tho Xuan (about 100km from Vinh City) or Dong Hoi (more than 200km away).
Although inconvenient in the short term, upgrading Vinh airport is expected to increase operating capacity, improve service quality and create momentum for aviation development in the North Central region in the future.
Airlines recommend that passengers proactively check flight information via the airline's official website or application; contact early to change or refund tickets to avoid last-minute overload; consider the travel time by road to the alternative airport and book tickets early to get a reasonable price.
