Việt NamViệt Nam29/12/2023

With just over a month left until the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin in 2024, flower garden owners in Son La city are actively taking care of their plants and applying many technical measures to help them grow well, ensuring that the flowers bloom on time, ready to supply the Tet market.

Farmers in Chieng Xom commune, City, take care of roses for the Lunar New Year.

Chieng Xom Commune is currently the locality with the largest flower growing area in the City, with more than 40 hectares. Farmers have been involved in flower growing for more than 20 years, mainly roses. Grasping the consumer demand during Tet, some households have expanded to grow more than 10 hectares of chrysanthemums, gladiolus and lilies, meeting the market demand for the upcoming Tet holiday.

Increase watering to ensure humidity for gladiolus to grow.

With more than 10 years of experience growing flowers, Mr. Luu Van Quang, Panh village, Chieng Xom commune, is one of the households growing the most flowers, with an area of 2 hectares, of which 1 hectare is roses sold year-round, 1 hectare is seasonal flowers. These days, he and his wife, along with 10 workers, work continuously, fertilizing, pruning, watering... to ensure the flowers grow well.

Mr. Quang said: This year, my family has planted more chrysanthemums and gladiolus. Starting from the end of September and the beginning of October, I have planted seasonal flowers of all kinds, especially chrysanthemums, which are planted overlapping each other, ensuring the supply of flowers before Tet and the full moon of January. To have healthy chrysanthemums and gladioluses, with large flowers, blooming on time for Tet, we have to be meticulous, diligent in taking care of them and applying science and technology to stimulate the plants to grow evenly, and turn on the lights at night to prevent the plants from hibernating in order to adjust the flowering time as desired. This year, my family plans to supply about 10,000 chrysanthemums and gladioluses.

Busy, always taking care of the chrysanthemum garden that has bloomed, Mr. Lo Van Hong, Hum village, Chieng Xom commune, shared: I have been working for the garden for 4 years, the main job is to plant and take care of all kinds of flowers. At this time, we are increasing the application of manure to increase nutrients for the plants. This year, the flower garden is growing very well, the plants are big and even. It is expected that from December 15, chrysanthemums and gladiolus can be cut and sold.

Currently, the City has over 56 hectares of flower growing areas, mainly concentrated in Chieng An ward, Chieng Xom, Hua La, Chieng Den communes... Of which, about 70% of the area maintains year-round rose care, the remaining area grows seasonal flowers. Gardeners invest in greenhouses and cold storage to preserve flowers to increase product value; proactively link and consume Tet flowers in the province and neighboring provinces. Flower growing in general and Tet flowers in particular bring in a stable source of income, with an average revenue of 200-300 million VND/year per hectare, creating regular jobs for hundreds of local workers.

Farmers use lighting to prevent plants from hibernating, ensuring flowers bloom in time for Tet.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nghia, Chieng An ward, shared: My family has more than 2 hectares of flowers of all kinds, mainly roses. Thanks to the application of science and technology in production, the flowers are fresh, healthy and beautiful, on average each hectare of flowers brings in revenue of 500 million VND/year, after deducting expenses, it reaches about 300-350 million VND/year. Compared to other crops, growing flowers brings in higher income and economic value. Flower growing requires a large labor force, each year the family needs about 10 regular and seasonal workers, with an income of 4-7 million VND/worker/month.

In order for the Tet flower market to not only have a good harvest but also good prices, farmers hope that the authorities will pay attention to promoting, introducing and consuming flower and ornamental plant products, supporting farmers in linking consumption, building brand logos for local flowers and ornamental plants, so that the Tet flower season will achieve the highest results, and everyone and every family will welcome Spring happily.
