On October 6, the General Statistics Office announced the industrial production situation in the first nine months of 2025.
Notably, the processing and manufacturing industry recorded a growth rate of 10.4% in 9 months, the highest since 2020. |
In general, the industrial production index (IIP) for the whole industry is estimated to increase by 9.1% over the same period last year. Notably, the processing and manufacturing industry recorded a growth rate of 10.4%, the highest since 2020, demonstrating its role as a driving force for growth in the whole industry.
According to the report, the industrial production index in the third quarter achieved an impressive growth of 10% compared to the same period last year. This breakthrough came from businesses boosting production for export before the US applied new tariffs. In addition, the improvement of mining and electricity production activities was also recorded in recent months. Specifically, the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 10.2%, the mining industry increased by 8.2%, the electricity production and distribution industry increased by 9.8% and the water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment industry increased by 5.3%.
In the first nine months, IIP is estimated to increase by 9.1% over the same period last year (higher than the 8.4% increase in the same period in 2024). In particular, the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 10.4% (increased by 9.6% in the same period in 2024) and contributed 8.4 percentage points to the overall increase, demonstrating its position as the growth engine. According to the General Statistics Office, this 10.4% increase is the highest figure recorded in the nine months of the years from 2020 to 2025.
Besides, the electricity production and distribution industry increased by 6.1%, contributing 0.6 percentage points, the water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment industry increased by 8.8%, contributing 0.1 percentage points and the mining industry increased by 0.1%, contributing 0.01 percentage points.
Analyzing the key secondary industries, the General Statistics Office pointed out that growth occurred in many important areas in the nine months, led by the production of motor vehicles with an increase of 26%. This was followed by the production of rubber and plastic products increasing by 17.3%, the production of other non-metallic mineral products increasing by 15.6%, the production of garments increasing by 13.5% and the production of prefabricated metal products (except machinery and equipment) increasing by 12.7%.
Many other industries also recorded double-digit growth, such as leather and related products (12.5%), metal production (11.3%), food processing (10.6%), bed, wardrobe, table and chair production (10.4%), paper production and wood processing (both up 10.3%). Meanwhile, beverage production increased by only 3.8% and crude oil and natural gas exploitation decreased by 4.7%.
The nine-month industrial production situation also showed positive spillovers in all 34 localities. Many localities achieved quite high growth rates thanks to the contribution of the processing and manufacturing industry and electricity production and distribution. Typical examples are Quang Ninh, Phu Tho, Ninh Binh in the processing and manufacturing group or Hue, Nghe An in the electricity production and distribution group.
Regarding consumption, the consumption index of the entire processing and manufacturing industry in September increased by 0.1% compared to the previous month and by 9.3% compared to the same period last year. In the first nine months, the consumption index increased by 9.1%.
In addition, the inventory index of the entire processing and manufacturing industry as of September 30 is estimated to increase by 4.9% compared to August and by 13.3% compared to the same period last year. The average inventory ratio for nine months is 82.3%.
The upturn in industrial production also had a positive impact on the labor market. The number of workers in industrial enterprises as of September 1 increased by 1.2% compared to the previous month and by 4.5% compared to the same period last year. Of which, foreign-invested enterprises recorded the highest increase in labor with 5.2% compared to the same period last year. By industry, labor in the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 4.7%, reflecting the need for human resources to meet the strong growth momentum of this industry.
