Going to the West - a bold, new but correct and timely decision of Ho Chi Minh

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/06/2023

To have the foundation, potential, position and international prestige as today is entirely thanks to the solidarity of millions of Vietnamese people, thanks to the correct leadership of the Party headed by President Ho Chi Minh - the one who devoted his whole life, striving and sacrificing for the sole goal of national independence and happiness for the people by starting right and reaching the destination. "Starting right" here is the decision to choose to go to Western countries to find a way to liberate the nation, bringing a prosperous life, freedom and happiness to the people.

The ship Admiral Latouche Treville took the young patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh to find a way to save the country from Nha Rong port on June 5, 1911.

Bold and fresh

We know that in the early 20th century, under the rule of French colonialism, our nation's independence was violated, the right to life and freedom of the majority of the people were trampled. The two contradictions in Vietnamese society at that time were the contradiction between the entire Vietnamese nation and the invading French colonialists and the contradiction between the working people, mainly farmers, and the landlord and feudal class, which became increasingly fierce. In that context, a series of questions were raised and the biggest question on the shoulders of all patriotic Vietnamese was how to liberate the nation and people from the misery of slavery?

While many people looked to the East with admiration for the "yellow elder brother" because at that time, Japan - a new empire in Asia - had defeated Tsarist Russia in 1905, as a typical example and a vivid example of the victory of Asians over Europeans; or admired Dr. Sun Yat-sen with his famous Three Principles of the People and the 1911 Xinhai bourgeois revolution in China, Nguyen Tat Thanh found his way to the West, to France, to the birthplace of the beautiful words: "Liberty - Equality - Fraternity" that had touched his heart when he was a teenager.

Although he admired the patriotism of the scholars, the young man Nguyen Tat Thanh soon realized that the path opened by his predecessors would not liberate the nation. If he relied on Japan, it would be "like chasing the tiger out the front door and welcoming the leopard in the back door"; This was something that not all Vietnamese people at that time realized. Or with Sun Yat-sen's Three Principles of the People, Nguyen Tat Thanh also realized that it could not overcome the limits of the bourgeoisie, still carrying the ideology of the bourgeoisie, so it only stopped at slogans and forms.

Not repeating the failures of those who came before is difficult, but finding a new path that conforms to the laws of historical development, bringing independence and freedom to the nation is much more difficult. The decision to go to the West is a completely new decision, contrary to the path of national salvation of previous generations, which was to seek help from Japan, from China... This is a commitment to a world that is still very new to our people, a world whose culture and academics are completely different from the traditional values of Vietnam, if not to say opposite and there is absolutely no exchange at all. It can be said that it was this boldness and courage that created the conditions for Nguyen Tat Thanh to gradually take the world into his sight and gradually enrich his awareness of a future revolution - the proletarian revolution.

Correct, timely

Thanks to choosing the right direction to the West, Ho Chi Minh was exposed to many new cultures and new ideas. With independent and autonomous thinking, he filtered and absorbed the appropriate cores, enriched his own cultural capital, and rose to the heights of human culture, becoming a culturalist who was both imbued with Eastern characteristics and extremely open and in harmony with Western culture. In particular, thanks to choosing the direction to the West, Ho Chi Minh had the opportunity to meet, study and absorb Marxism-Leninism, thanks to which he acquired a scientific and revolutionary worldview and methodology that helped to thoroughly resolve the cause of national liberation in Vietnam.

Besides, when living, working and operating in the West, witnessing many major developments of the era, Nguyen Ai Quoc realized that in addition to the achievements of the revolutions in the West that helped promote the progress of humanity in all aspects from politics, economics, science and technology... the existence, gaps and injustices in rights and enjoyments in the heart of capitalist society would inevitably lead to inevitable crises in even the capitalist countries. That is the distinction between rich and poor between the oppressors and the oppressed in the colonies, between the working people in capitalist countries and the colonialists, the wealthy people, and he made a profound observation: "Despite the difference in skin color, in this world there are only two races of people: the exploiters and the exploited. And there is only one true friendship: proletarian friendship" (Ho Chi Minh: Complete Works, National Political Publishing House, Hanoi, 1996, vol. 1, p. 266).

After traveling through many continents and countries around the world, Nguyen Ai Quoc, along with that examination and comparison, when reading the first draft of theses on the national and colonial issues by V. Lenin (July 1920), came to an important decision - that is, to come to Marxism-Leninism, to the path of proletarian revolution, to the Russian October Revolution and the Third International founded by Lenin. Studying Marxism-Leninism, Nguyen Ai Quoc not only found a way to save the country and save the people in accordance with the laws of the times, but also equipped himself with a new outlook on life to shape the path of development for a backward and underdeveloped Vietnam to be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great powers of the five continents.

Going to the West was Ho Chi Minh's process of testing, adapting and surpassing, when he gathered the quintessence and knowledge of human civilizations to both create and independently apply to the specific conditions of Vietnam later. He not only succeeded in applying a doctrine, which had a practical basis from Western society, to the reality of a colonial, semi-feudal, and underdeveloped country like Vietnam, but also developed the Marxist-Leninist doctrine to a new level, suitable for the rest of the world - those countries that had not yet gone through the stage of capitalist development, of which Vietnam was a typical example.

So, with the decision to go to the West, with a 30-year journey of working, studying and participating in revolutionary activities abroad, Nguyen Ai Quoc had time to explore and contemplate to understand the essence of the slogan "Freedom, Equality, Fraternity", of the rule of law, democracy and the model of bourgeois state organization; of human rights, rule of law, democracy, the model of Soviet state organization, and the path of national liberation struggle in the spirit of Lenin. And the right choice of Ho Chi Minh after "distilling" the quintessence of Eastern and Western civilizations, of capitalism, socialism... helped him realize his ambition, which was to liberate his nation, liberate "oppressed peoples and workers around the world from slavery", and completely liberate humanity.

Thus, starting from the great ambition of the patriotic young man Nguyen Tat Thanh more than a century ago, from a correct beginning, with will, determination and tireless efforts for the path he had chosen, Ho Chi Minh - the one who left Saigon port in the past - found the path and led the Vietnamese people to independence and unity, freedom and happiness, to develop and be sustainable day by day. With what we have today, we have every right to proudly affirm: Without President Ho Chi Minh and the proletarian revolutionary path that he found for the Vietnamese revolution, the Vietnamese people could not have the foundation, potential, position and international prestige as they do today.
