The landslide caused nearly 100m of the dike of Viet Thang commune to collapse into the river.
According to people living near the landslide area, the eroded riverbank had previously been embanked. The incident occurred just a few hours after the construction unit removed the concrete pillars of the old embankment.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ut, who lives near the landslide site, said: “Previously, this area had a landslide, at the intersection of the culverts, the soil was eroded inwards. When the construction team removed all the old embankment, a few hours later, subsidence appeared, dragging the new embankment under construction and the road above into the river. If the old embankment had not been removed, there would not have been a landslide.”
Viet Thang Commune People's Committee initially recorded a landslide on the embankment belonging to the closed anti-landslide project of Sub-region X - South Ca Mau and the construction workers of the new unit removed the old embankment pillar, then the landslide occurred.
Mr. Huynh Phuong Nhanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Viet Thang Commune, said: "The landslide caused the entire surface of the dike of sub-region X, about 100m long, to collapse, making it impossible to travel. The commune has urgently reported the incident to the district to survey, assess the cause and find solutions to support the repair. For now, the commune has built a temporary road inside the landslide section for motorbikes to pass, while waiting for a more permanent solution to fix it."
In recent years, Viet Thang commune has been one of the landslide “hotspots” of Phu Tan district. On May 3, two small-scale landslides also occurred in the commune.
