Thailand will hold a year-long national mourning to commemorate Queen Mother Sirikit.
On October 24, Thailand received sad news when Queen Mother Sirikit passed away at the age of 93. King Maha Vajiralongkorn ordered a state funeral, with the most solemn ceremony and the highest honor according to royal tradition. King Maha Vajiralongkorn also issued a one-year state mourning period for the Royal Family and officials of the Royal Court, starting from October 24.
“According to the Thai Royal Family’s regulations, during the first 30 days of national mourning, entertainment activities, art performances or festivals will be restricted. After November 24, preparations and organization of the 33rd SEA Games will continue as normal. In addition, the time for organizing the 33rd SEA Games will remain the same. The opening ceremony is expected to take place on December 9 in Bangkok,” Thairath wrote.
Thus, the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand will still take place as planned. Before that, when the sad news in Thailand appeared, many newspapers in the region speculated that this great event could be postponed to 2026, or even canceled, not held.

However, it is expected that the largest sports event in Southeast Asia will also have small changes: "The format of the opening and closing ceremonies of the SEA Games will be changed. We want to ensure everything is in accordance with customs and rituals," said Thai Sports Minister Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn.
In addition to this change, Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn said that Thailand will make some adjustments to domestic sporting events. He shared: “Entertainment activities will be limited. There will be no cancellation or postponement of matches in the Thai League. However, the format of events will be adjusted, including the mourning process and reducing activities or entertainment-related elements to suit the current situation.”
