Afraid of being overshadowed by other families?

Việt NamViệt Nam27/09/2023

After graduating from vocational school in agriculture , Mạnh only wished to return to his hometown to work. His decision was commendable, because in this rural area, most young adults seek opportunities to "spread their wings and fly far away," leaving only the elderly and children in the countryside on ordinary days.

For a long time, finding people to work as village officials has been difficult, with the main source being retired people. Therefore, Mạnh's decision to return to his hometown to start a business after completing his studies has brought great joy to many of the village officials.

Upon returning to his hometown, Mạnh was elected to the village's Youth Union Executive Committee. When the Youth Union Secretary went to work in Japan, Mạnh was elected as the Youth Union leader. Using the skills he learned at school, especially in organizing youth activities, Mạnh strengthened the Youth Union's organization and boosted its activities. In less than six months, the Youth Union, which had been dormant, awakened with many rich and beneficial activities. Mạnh excelled in both community and personal matters, in youth movement activities, and in his agricultural economic thinking. Those with a positive outlook trusted, supported, and encouraged Mạnh.

One might have thought that the "flagpole" had been chosen from the "bundle of chopsticks"! But no, several times the Party committee and branch held meetings about admitting Mạnh into the Party and selecting him as a potential village head (to replace the current, elderly one), but Mạnh never received more than half of the votes, and none of them succeeded. In those meetings, only a few opinions supported Mạnh, while the opposing opinions were overwhelming, with various reasons: that he only had the surface but lacked depth; that he had enthusiasm but lacked maturity; that to become a village head, he needed to learn and accumulate much more experience...

It's easy to see that the opinions against Mạnh all came from party members belonging to a large clan in the village (accounting for more than two-thirds of the branch's party members). In reality, these clan members disagreed with Mạnh's admission into the Party and his selection as a potential village head simply because the Youth Union Secretary wasn't related to them. These numerous clan members secretly opposed Mạnh, even discussing it during clan meetings: "Let's wait for someone from our clan who's working far away to return and become both village head and Party branch secretary. Our clan is the biggest in the village, so we can't let someone from another clan be the leader, making our clan seem 'inferior' (?).

The selfish, petty-bourgeois mindset and the non-collective, biased behavior described above are far removed from Party culture, causing disunity and exhibiting parochialism. From another perspective, it is also a one-sided, negative viewpoint that discourages young people from striving, causing harmful consequences for both the collective and individuals, especially negatively impacting the building of a strong Party in terms of politics , ideology, ethics, organization, and personnel, as well as the recruitment and development of grassroots cadres. Even more dangerous is that these negative thoughts and actions serve as a pretext for hostile and reactionary forces to exploit, incite, and undermine our Party and regime, causing "self-evolution" and "self-transformation" within the Party.

Therefore, every Party member must uphold Party principles, adhere to Party rules, and ensure that issues are viewed and resolved fairly and objectively, for the development of the collective—only then can one be considered civilized and progressive. In particular, Party members must seriously practice self-criticism and criticism, refrain from participating in family meetings that interfere with the work of the Party branch committee, Party cell, and government at all levels, especially those whose content is contrary to both law and morality; and at the same time, carefully choose their words to advise, suggest, and persuade relatives and acquaintances to abandon negative, short-sighted, and parochial thoughts.
