On the evening of March 6, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the Department will continue to advise the city on a proposed plan to maintain stability for students applying for grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam Specialized School for the 2024-2025 school year.

"If the proposal is approved, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted may continue to enroll 6th graders next school year," the representative said, affirming that this is a short-term solution. In the long term, the Department of Education and Training will study and advise the city on a plan to request a special mechanism for Hanoi in maintaining the junior high school system at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.

The leader of the city's Department of Education and Training also explained that Hanoi is implementing a high-quality public school model according to the Capital Law. The law clearly states "to build a number of high-quality preschool and generaleducation facilities in the capital according to criteria on facilities, teaching staff, programs, teaching methods and educational services. Studying at high-quality educational facilities is voluntary".

The secondary school system of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted (often referred to as "Ams2") was established in 2009 by the decision of the City People's Committee. Since then, the enrollment (planning, preliminary selection, exam organization, exam questions, grading...) into grade 6 at Amsterdam school has been organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

Each year, the Amsterdam school grade 6 exam recruits 200 students, but there are about 4,000 - 5,000 candidates registering for the exam each year. This is a notoriously difficult exam with extremely strict requirements right from the application round. After passing round 1, candidates will continue to participate in the competency assessment test (round 2) with questions at a high level of application.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training sent a document requesting the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to direct the enrollment of students into specialized high schools in accordance with regulations. The above request was made by the Ministry of Education and Training based on Clause 1, Article 62 of the 2019 Education Law, specialized schools are established at the high school level, so there is no junior high school level in specialized schools.

In the document, the Ministry of Education and Training also stated that the secondary school enrollment model of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is no longer in accordance with regulations. Therefore, from this year, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is not allowed to enroll 6th graders.

The news that Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted was asked to stop enrolling students for the secondary school program this year has made many parents worried, especially those whose children are in grade 5 and have prepared plans to submit their application for grade 6 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in the 2024 - 2025 school year.
