According to recent statistics from the Payment Department (State Bank), by the end of the first quarter of 2025, the total number of valid bank cards nationwide reached nearly 157 million cards, an increase of 1 million cards in just the first three months of the year.
Compared to 4 years ago, this number has increased nearly 1.5 times, showing that the trend of expanding cashless payments continues to increase in the community.
However, the release bank card Domestic payment cards show signs of slowing down. The system has only about 107 million domestic payment cards, down 700,000 cards compared to the end of last year and the lowest level in the past year.
Card transactions (including cash withdrawals, transfers, savings deposits, etc.) via ATMs also decreased slightly in the first quarter of the year. People made transactions worth more than VND660 trillion, down VND2 trillion compared to the last quarter of last year.
On the contrary, the number of international payment cards in circulation has increased sharply. credit institution issued about 1.8 million more international cards in the first quarter of 2025, bringing the total number of such cards to 50.2 million, a three-fold increase compared to early 2021. The boom in cross-border e-commerce, the demand for international travel as well as online shopping in foreign currencies are said to be the factors driving this growth.
The sharp increase in the number of international payment cards reflects the need for Vietnamese people to expand their spending and global payment capabilities. However, this also poses a significant challenge for the domestic card system when it needs to innovate products and services to retain users.
Some experts believe that although domestic cards and international cards are not direct competitors, the strong trend of users shifting to online and cross-border payments is causing international cards to grow faster, and banks must reposition the role of domestic cards to maintain their usage value.
Specifically, domestic cards need to continue to innovate technology, increase utilities and optimize service fees to maintain market share in the context of increasingly fierce competition between card products. At the same time, enhancing security in electronic transactions is also a key factor to promote trust and expand the user ecosystem.
