Engaging in community activities is the most effective way for Gen Z to enhance their understanding of the world around them.
Dao Ha Vy (20 years old, from Ca Mau) has participated in volunteer programs since high school. Vy has experience teaching life skills to children with developmental delays and disadvantaged backgrounds in her local area.
Serving the community
Vy's skills class provides a lot of useful information for children, from protecting themselves when alone to how to handle dangerous situations on the road.
Vy also actively campaigned to raise funds for building a swimming pool in her hometown, helping children become familiar with the aquatic environment and preventing tragic accidents. One of Vy's highly appreciated achievements was proposing to change the name of the "charity class" to "summer class." This seemingly small change helped create a more intimate learning environment, fostering a sense of equality, friendliness, and comfort.

Summer classes run by student volunteers benefit many children in remote areas.
According to Vy, engaging in community activities is the most effective way for Gen Z to enhance their understanding of the world around them and become more self-aware. Vy shared: "Knowing how to love and respect others is very special. I try to cultivate that and pass it on to the younger generation." In university, Vy actively participated in the Green Summer volunteer campaign and readily contributed to charitable projects.

For Pham Ngoc Anh Thu (25 years old, from An Giang province), participating in iChange Summer Camp 2018 – the annual summer camp of AIESEC (an international youth organization present in over 108 countries and 2,000 universities worldwide) – was a memorable start to her volunteer journey. The beautiful memories and valuable connections from this milestone motivated Thu to enthusiastically participate in subsequent volunteer activities of the Faculty of International Relations and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City). Thu adapts to many different roles, as long as they bring something useful to others. She is willing to stand at fundraising stalls at fairs or cook and provide food for the homeless. In addition, Thu actively participates in blood donation.
The Spring Volunteer Campaign is a meeting point for many generations of students to dedicate their youthful energy.
After graduating, despite being busy with work, Thu still devoted much of her energy to non-profit projects, especially in the field of environmental protection. Thu affirmed: "The valuable experiences gained during my volunteer work motivate me to want to contribute more." This past summer, Thu added another milestone to her journey by spending half a month volunteering to protect sea turtles at Con Dao National Park.
Kindness Nursery
The spirit of living a beautiful life needs to be sown and nurtured everywhere, especially in schools. Currently, many universities have adopted a model of learning combined with community activities to guide and encourage students to actively participate in humanitarian projects both inside and outside the classroom.
Dr. Nhan Cam Tri, Vice Rector of the University of Economics and Finance Ho Chi Minh City (UEF), stated that UEF is one of the first universities to establish a Community Connection Center (also known as a Service-Learning Center). The Service-Learning teaching method has been implemented for many years, directly integrated into several specialized subjects, requiring students to apply their knowledge to practice throughout the course and create practical values that bring tangible benefits to the community, especially focusing on disadvantaged groups.
"Community Connection projects have great educational significance. Besides equipping students with knowledge, the school hopes that students will mature through skills, gain a deep understanding of society, develop their character, live with compassion and responsibility for others, and strive towards noble goals," Mr. Tri expressed. Not only lecturers but also students can proactively propose and initiate projects to foster their sense of social responsibility.
Spreading the spirit of compassion and sharing.
In recent times, the Central Youth Union and many youth organizations have also intensified activities to promptly identify, honor, and replicate good practices and exemplary lifestyles among young people. The annual National Volunteer Day (December 5th) has truly become a festival eagerly awaited by many young people. This is an opportunity to recognize, commend, and express gratitude for the contributions of domestic and international organizations and volunteers who always volunteer to bring good things to society and the community. Through this, the spirit of compassion, sharing, initiative, and volunteerism of organizations and individuals in society continues to spread.
The 2024 National Volunteer Award will be announced in a few days, and it is expected to continue to bring forth many inspiring stories about individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to volunteer work for the community.
