Soobin: 'I don't want my image to be impulsive, sensational statements'

Responding to Tuoi Tre, Soobin admitted that he is fierce in music. He is obsessed with 'all-rounder', not wanting his image to be associated with rash, sensational statements.

More than 20 years of accompanying music since he was a boy, SOOBIN has had many beautiful milestones and also many hardships.

He told Tuoi Tre: "The two-day All-Rounder concert is what I have been looking for for more than ten years, an unforgettable mark. As for the program Vinh quang cong an nhan dan (People's Public Security) , I was able to stand on stage twice in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, honored to contribute my voice to honor the brave spirit of the country."

With the purest heart

* What was your most beautiful moment during these memorable days?

- During the two-day concert, I didn't miss a single moment. I enjoyed every moment on stage to the fullest.

As for the program Vinh quang cong an nhan dan (People's Public Security) , the most memorable was the first time I sang Tien quan ca at a major national event, in front of a large audience. I felt like I had a big responsibility on my shoulders and had to do it well. When I finished, I felt very proud.

My voice is not clear and not very powerful but I used all my feelings to sing Tien Quan Ca.

Soobin

* Soobin sings Tien Quan Ca gently and passionately, and is said to be "the voice of someone born in peacetime", different from the heroic, marching singing of the previous generation.

- When assigned to sing such a sacred song, I will do my best, with everything I have, more than any other song I have ever sung. There won't be many opportunities to sing that song on such a meaningful stage.

The way I approach this song is very different from when I was in school, singing at flag-raising ceremonies. At that time, I was very young, unable to fully feel the grandeur, the profound meaning, nor could I properly express the spirit of the song.

Now, I am mature enough, my patriotism and national pride are very high. When I sing, I let my soul be pure, innocent, and natural, singing with all that I feel to express the feelings of a patriot.

In the first part, I sang moderately and passionately, then in the second part, I sang more majestically, decisively, and strongly, and used all my strength to explode in the last two "advancing" parts. Some people will sympathize, some will not. As for me, I just want to put my purest heart into singing Tien Quan Ca, hoping that the audience will sympathize.

All-rounder obsession

* Standing in the present, what do you want to say to the Soobin of the past - the Soobin that you once admitted "lost his way several times"?

- Soobin at that time was very strong in choosing to trust the people around him and his own direction so as not to get lost. He did not let anything influence him to deviate to another career, to wholeheartedly devote himself to music.

I am not a very individualistic person. I am gentle and shy but I am fierce in music. I am not competitive by nature but when it comes to music I will play to the end.

I am also at the age where I want to set an example for the next generation. I have worked with both young people and seniors in the profession, who are very talented and have many years of experience. I aim to live decently and kindly with everyone, respecting and being considerate.

I don't want my image to be impulsive and sensational because that's not who I am. I'm used to living a normal, simple life, but on stage I'm a different person.

* BTS singer Jungkook once shared that there is a difference between artists in real life and on stage. Sometimes when he is sad, he wishes he could be as strong as on stage, what about you?

- Me too. When I am weak outside, I am often alone. If I share, it is only with the people I truly love and trust, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. I really like to talk and confide.

On stage, it's like someone has entered me. When I step onto the stage, I'm no longer "Son" but Soobin. I think artists are always like that. When I'm on stage, I forget myself.

* Specifically, how is Soobin on stage different from Soobin off stage?

- More handsome (laughs). Emotions are expressed more clearly. When I sing, I transform into the emotions of that song. When I sing Tro Choi, I look extremely like a street boy because I used to be a street boy. But with Xin Dung Lang Im, I sing like a heartbroken person because I used to be heartbroken.

On stage, I transform into many different images and moods depending on the song, but in real life I am boring and have difficulty expressing my emotions. I am obsessed with the word "all-rounder", wanting to be versatile, do many things, and play many things.

* After the concert, many people called you an all-round artist, including musician Huy Tuan. Does Soobin think he is completely worthy of that title?

- Thank you Huy Tuan for your kind words and the colleagues in the profession for their love and affection for me. In the past 3-4 years, when I was in a state of not knowing if I was on the right path or if I was really good, when I was in a team of SpaceSpeakers where everyone was good, I asked myself if I was worthy to stand with them.

But recently I have been working hard and exploring my potential. I see that I am not good at everything, but what I need to be good at, I do it completely. It is easy to meet people's expectations, but it is very difficult to maintain them for a long time. That is what I am trying to do.

The trophy fortune is missing only one trophy.

* Currently in the "prosperous" period of Vietnamese music with many strong male singers, the competition is also more fierce?

- Recently, there are more and more hit songs that are trending at number 1 and number 2 and have an influence on the audience. That is partly due to competition. The market has to be like that so that artists have more ideas to strive for.

But competition must be fair and civilized, that will motivate artists regardless of male or female to have quality products. Saying "duong thinh" is not right because recently a female artist also has a very hot, very wonderful product, Bac Bling by Hoa Minzy.

* Is the pressure of your national hit still heavy?

- No. Music for me is now like a walk, not too heavy on achievements. My trophy collection now only lacks a single trophy for solo concert of the year. The desire for a hit is definitely there but not as much as when I first started my career.

* In 2017, when he won the Artist of the Year award, many people believed that "Soobin will go a long way in music" because he has a very good foundation. In fact, he has gone a long way but everything is not easy but very thorny.

- I have never heard such compliment before. I realize that what I have learned in the past 14 years has not been in vain.

Being born and raised in an artistic home is a great fortune. Being able to work and make a living from it is also a fortune. Reaching milestones and being recognized by everyone is both a fortune and an effort.

Over 30 years old, studying is still normal. No matter how winding the road is, I still study continuously, to prove that I am worthy of what people say. During the years when I "disappeared" or did not appear much, that was still the momentum to bounce back.

* What goals do you feel you still need to conquer in the future?

- Last year, I wanted to do a concert this year, so I did. Next year, my wish is to do a live concert abroad. Maybe in America or Europe.

Soobin still dreams of family reunion

* Recently, your parents appeared together at your concerts and many of your activities. Even though your parents are no longer together, is Soobin's family happiness complete?

- Many nights I still dream of the family of four reuniting and going out together. When I wake up, I realize it is very difficult. During the All-Rounder concert, I stood on the same stage with my father for the first time in my life. The feeling at that time was strange. I felt like I was old enough, the pillar of the family, bringing fame and pride to the family, so that the elders could be proud of their eldest grandson.

My parents have always been a safe zone that I didn't want anyone to touch, even when they were no longer together.
