Steam Deck OLED screen 'burned' because of displaying HDR content

According to TechNewsSpace , although manufacturers have made significant progress in minimizing the risk of burn-in on OLED screens, the likelihood of it occurring remains high. Tech bloggers also frequently test various devices using this type of screen to check their durability. This time, YouTube bloggers Wulff Den and The Phawx tested Valve's Steam Deck OLED handheld game console, released late last year, which differs from the original version, particularly in its OLED screen.

Steam Deck OLED version

Bloggers have found that slight screen burn-in on the Steam Deck's OLED display can occur after approximately 1,000-1,500 hours of use. While this is only half the performance of the Nintendo Switch's OLED display, for the average user, screen burn-in can still appear after a very long period of use.

Burn-in occurs when pixels are overused and become dull over time, leaving the image of frequently displayed patterns on the screen. This can typically happen when an OLED screen displays a static image for too long. During their Steam Deck testing, bloggers attempted to simulate a worst-case scenario that many users might not encounter. However, the work they did could be an important source of information for owners of Valve's handheld gaming console.

During testing, Wulff Den displayed a still image from the game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on a Steam Deck monitor with a color bar added to the top of the screen for 1,500 hours. Simultaneously, blogger The Phawx used a special program to test different colors in SDR and HDR modes. Interestingly, when playing HDR content at brightness up to 1000 cd/m², image burn-in appeared after only 750 hours, while in the case of SDR content and brightness of 600 cd/m², a slight burn-in effect appeared after 1,500 hours, affecting only blue and red pixels.

Screen burn-in phenomenon on Steam Deck consoles.

It's highly unlikely that many regular Steam Deck OLED users will experience such rapid screen burn-in. However, image retention, especially when playing the same game for extended periods, can occur after about a year of use, around the time the warranty expires.
