“Today is a day of mourning in Grona Lund, we have had a very serious accident with the Jetline roller coaster, with one person killed and nine injured,” said Jan Eriksson, CEO of the park.
Ambulances, fire engines and a helicopter were seen arriving shortly after the crash, and police have launched an investigation. Police said nine injured people were being treated in hospital, with three seriously injured.
"Something like this should not happen in Grona Lund, but it did," Eriksson said, adding that the 140-year-old park would be closed for at least a week to assist with the police investigation.
A park spokesman said 14 people were on the roller coaster when the front section partially derailed. It then came to a stop in the middle of the track with one car leaning outward.
Jenny Lagerstedt, a journalist visiting the park with her family, told Swedish broadcaster SVT that she was nearby and heard metal scraping and noticed the track structure shaking at the time of the accident.
“My husband saw a roller coaster with people in it falling to the ground. My children were very scared,” Lagerstedt added.
Grona Lund is a popular waterfront entertainment spot on one of Stockholm's many islands, surrounded by several museums.
The Jetline roller coaster has a steel track that reaches speeds of up to 90 km/h and is 30 meters high, serving more than a million visitors each year, according to information on the amusement park's website.
Swedish Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand said the accident was incomprehensible. “My thoughts go out to those affected and their families and loved ones,” Liljestrand said in a statement to the TT news agency.
