The 20-year-old has enjoyed a promising start to life at Leverkusen. |
Signal Iduna Park was rocked by the calmness of Ibrahim Maza. The young midfielder of Vietnamese origin's razor-sharp finish helped Leverkusen reach the quarter-finals of the German Cup. Maza has been a regular starter this season, scoring three goals and adding two assists in 17 games in all competitions.
Dortmund entered the match with great determination, pressing their opponents from the first minutes. Adeyemi and then Nmecha took turns testing the opponent's goalkeeper with long-range shots. At one point the ball missed the post by a few centimeters, making the Westfalen stands seem to explode. But while the home team was still busy finding a way to break through Leverkusen's defense, the decisive moment of the match appeared in the 34th minute.
In a lightning counter-attack, Maza received the ball in the penalty area, turned slightly to create space and then shot hard into the top corner. The ball went so dangerously that the Dortmund goalkeeper could only stand and watch. A cool, neat kick, enough to leave thousands of yellow-shirted spectators stunned.
The second half saw Dortmund storm forward like a storm. However, all of this was stopped by a brilliant Mark Flekken in the Leverkusen goal. At least twice, the goalkeeper dived to make spectacular saves, especially in the 80th minute against Waldemar Anton.
Leverkusen held on and sealed a deserved victory. Maza's only goal sent the Rhine team through, marking another brilliant performance from the Vietnamese-born player who is increasingly making a name for himself in Germany.
Maza has an Algerian father and a Vietnamese mother. He was born and raised in Germany and played for the youth teams of this country. However, Maza eventually chose to play for the Algerian national team.
