Gianluigi Donnarumma has only been at Manchester City for three months, but he is facing an unwelcome milestone: becoming the first goalkeeper in the Premier League to be suspended for accumulating five yellow cards. Remarkably, he has only played 10 games.
In the 3-2 win over Leeds in round 13 of the Premier League, Donnarumma was booked again for his reaction, the third time he has done so in England. Another yellow card came for time-wasting. That is why, at the age of 26, he is forced to play with the utmost caution in the match against Fulham, which will take place at 2:30 am on December 3 and the following rounds, at least until the 19th match of the season. At that time, the card threshold will increase to 10 and the risk of suspension will decrease.
Coach Pep Guardiola remained calm when asked about the possibility of his player being banned. He said the team always had a plan, with James Trafford, the English goalkeeper bought back this summer, fully capable of replacing Donnarumma if he was suspended. However, no one denied that the new player from PSG has quickly become a mainstay in goal.
In addition to the disciplinary issue, Donnarumma also caused controversy when he lay down to receive medical treatment in the match against Leeds, inadvertently allowing Guardiola to give tactical instructions. That situation caused coach Daniel Farke to raise the issue of "circumventing the rules" when the goalkeeper was not forced to leave the field for 30 seconds like other players. Several proposals to change the rules have been raised, including forcing the team to withdraw a player if the goalkeeper is lying down for treatment.
Despite the ongoing controversy, Donnarumma’s early impact in England has been enough to put him in the spotlight, and now his every move will be scrutinised, not just for his technical ability but also because a yellow card could send him into history in a way few would have wanted.
