Diogo Jota passed away before his 29th birthday. |
Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a tragic traffic accident in Spain on July 3, leaving a big void in the hearts of fans and the entire club.
On social media platforms, Liverpool posted a picture of Jota wearing a Portuguese flag around his waist, holding up the Premier League trophy he won with the team last season. Attached to the picture was a short but emotional message.
Liverpool's fan page wrote: "On this day, as every day, we remember Diogo Jota, who would have been celebrating his 29th birthday. All our love, thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Rute, his children, his parents, his family and friends, as well as Andre's family. He will always be in our hearts. He will always be our number 20."
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and wore the number 20 shirt for five seasons. At Anfield, he won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup, becoming a fan favourite thanks to his fighting spirit and professional attitude.
After Jota passed away, Liverpool decided to retire the number 20 shirt permanently, as a way to honor the legacy he left for the club. Not stopping there, the Merseyside team confirmed that they will build a memorial monument at Anfield to honor his dedication - a symbol for future generations to continue to remember.
